Hello!

If you’re fortunate enough to be sitting with a newborn baby nestled on your chest right now, congratulations!

There are so many incredible things about newborn babies, including that moment you actually get to see their little faces for the first time and not just a baby is born, but a mother, a father, grandparents, aunties and uncles.

A whole new family is born on that special day.

It’s hard to whittle the list down and keep to just 10 but I’ve listed my 10 favourite things about newbies:

  1. Their smell. Is there a better smell in the world? Why hasn’t someone bottled it? Their smell makes you fall instantly in love with them.
  2. Their little nails. Is it just me or do they look like tiny little perfect seashells?
  3. Their bums. Yes they’re busy bums who are ah, used a lot, but gee whizz they’re cute as. Often wrinkly, sometimes oddly saggy but always round and kissable. Tiny bums, enough said.
  4. Rolls and wrinkles. Some babies are born looking like grandbabies – wrinkly like little old people. Don’t get me started on those rolls, on their wrists, behind their necks, on their thighs, so hard to resist having a little pinch!
  5. They’ll sleep on you. It doesn’t get much better than having a newborn baby sound asleep on your chest.
  6. Rosebud lips and perfectly pink gums. I love newborns lips, so perfect and pink and I love that they are born without a single tooth. There’s something so endearing seeing their little gums.
  7. Baby clothes. Oh gosh it’s hard not to go overboard, particularly when they grow so quickly. But oh the little things you can buy, coloured vests, wincy jeans, the tiniest sneakers, silly hats. And baby doesn’t mind at all what they’re wearing. This doesn’t last long – toddlers are a different kettle of fish – so enjoy dressing your baby while you can.
  8. That moment your partner becomes a parent. It’s just wonderful watching the person you love then falling in love with the person you created together.
  9. So much ahead of them. I used to love watching my daughter sleeping in her cot, so peaceful with not a worry in the world and her whole life of opportunity awaiting her.
  10. They just love you completely. Completely, unconditionally, like no one else has loved you before. You are their entire world and in fact, up till about 6 months of age, babies don’t even understand the concept of individuals. Your baby still thinks he and you are one person! She can remember your voice from when he was in your tummy and she loves the smell of you.

  • I was absolutely going to say smell — and their squishiness! They’re so adorable you just want to hug and squeeze, and love.

  • This is a great list for 2 to 8 month old babies – just love that smell. But brand new newborns having all their fingers and all their toes and looking just absolutely perfect – that’s awesome.

  • This list covers most important points. I LOVE the smell too and how indeed they can nestle on your chest: so innocent, depending, vulnerable and loving…you don’t want it to stop :)

  • Half of these things don’t apply to newborns, but rather babies a few months old. Just that awe feeling you get when you look at them and think: I created you.

  • There are just so many wonderful things and moments that we love about our newborn daughter. Well she is 3 months old now so maybe not considered a ‘new born’ but she still is to us. One moment we both agree is incredibly special are those moments when we get that wide mouthed smile from her. My husband always says that when he has to get up in the middle of the night for a feed – it is all worth it when he sees her beautiful smile and excitement to see him. I love that too. We just cannot get enough & look forward to more incredible moments together.

  • I think the list of things to love about newborns is endless isn’t it? Especially when it’s about your own. I remember gooing and gah-ing, ooh-ing and ah-ing over their poos, burps, farts even vomits. Brain mush obviously
