Hello!

School’s out and your kids are stoked – no more early starts, school rules or homework. Right?

As true as this may be, you on the other hand, may not be as thrilled. The reality of keeping your kids occupied and out of trouble over the coming weeks can be a little overwhelming.

Our modern kids are drawn to enjoying screen time for play and entertainment, but some of the online activities they’re drawn to aren’t exactly quality learning experiences.

So for when your kids have had enough of riding their bike, playing Totem Tennis and jumping on the trampoline, I’ve put together a list of quality educational websites to keep them occupied:

For primary kids

ABC Splash

This fun, learning centred website is developed by the ABC and has loads of quality, learning activities and info for your kids.

There are cool games, videos and activities for primary aged kids relating to – Maths, History, English and Science.  A very user friendly format to keep your kids happy, learning and entertained.

4Kids.Org

Maths, word, typing and geography games for primary age kids, with an easy ‘Cool Spots‘ search feature to find more quality learning sites that suit your kids’ tastes.

Mathletics

Fun maths games that match the curriculum from Kindergarten through to Year 12.

More than 1,000 learning activities with online support to assist your children’s learning, with real time games that encourage students to improve their speed and skill level while playing with their peers.

WilderQuest

A fun, interactive geography game to encourage children to learn about the Australian environment.

Can be adjusted according to their age and skill level. Great graphics and engaging video format to keep your kids enthralled and learning.

How Stuff Works

Photos, quizzes, videos, puzzles, games and blog posts for older primary-aged kids and above.

A broad range of informative content can be explored from ‘How Snowboarding Works‘ to ’10 Homes with Hidden Passageways’.

Perfect for the inquisitive and curious minded older child, but does contain content produced for grown-ups that you may not consider appropriate for your child.

For high school kids

ABC Splash

The ABC always impresses with quality web content, and your teens will be impressed with their education site for secondary students.

This website contains English, Maths, Science and History games, videos and resources for students in Year 7 through to Year 10.

ABC Splash is a great website with modern graphics and is very user friendly to keep your teen engaged, intrigued and learning.

There are plenty of quality activities for your teen to explore, without realising that they’re learning.

Discovery Kids

This is a fantastic science focused site created by the Discovery Channel.

It has a great range of games, information and activities for younger high school students.  The site has a fun Myth Buster Lab, some engaging puzzles and quiz games of different skill levels, and an awesome volcano builder, plus loads more for your science minded teens covering a fantastic range of topics.

Cosmos

This Australian website is produced by Cosmos Magazine and features science based study guides for advanced high school students.

The free study guides are print friendly and allow your teens to learn detailed information about science topics from Earth’s Atmosphere and Radio Astronomy, to The Year of The Farmer and Myths of Low-Level Speeding.

Atlapedia

For teens interested in geography, modern history and the environment, this is a great website for them to explore the world around them.

Atlapedia contains maps and detailed country information for students to discover. They can search the countries of the world in an easy A to Z format to view each country’s location in the world, and read information about the geography, climate, people, religion, history and economy of each country.

IXL

Maths minded teenagers, or those needing a little mathematics refresher of the school holidays will benefit from checking out IXL.

This Australian website is very fresh and modern in design and fits the learning outcomes of the national maths curriculum.

Your teen can simply click on their year level and choose the maths category they wish to practice. IXL will then track their score, and the questions will automatically increase in difficulty as they improve.

Hopefully these website ideas will help your kids learning over the holidays in a fun way. Please share below if you have any other suggestions.

  • Hmmm, not sure I’ll get onto this, it’s the holidays….I might let them take a break from learning. Unless they’re driving me crazy and I’m desperate

  • Unfortunately, my son has a bit of homework over these holidays so we fully support his downtime for doing nothing but rest, play and things he enjoys.
