Actress and adoption campaigner Deborra-Lee Furness launches National Adoption Awareness Week with a call to find new homes for 15,000 Australian kids.

Deborra-Lee said there are 50,000 Australian children in foster care, 15,000 of whom have been there for two or more years.

She wrote for the Daily Telegraph today:

“There are thousands of children in Australia who don’t go to bed at night feeling safe and secure and loved, knowing that someone has their best interests at heart.”

“They are depending on grown-ups they have sometimes never met, to make the right choices for their well-being and their futures depend on it.”

She said only 203 children had been adopted last year in Australia and urged the community to get behind the cause using the #15000Stories hashtag.

“Behind every single statistic is a child in need,” Furness wrote.

“It’s not just a file number.

“It’s a child that needs to be loved and part of a family. And it’s a child that needs our help.”

  • I would support this cause 120% myself and my partner have considered adoption but they make it too hard to do. I can give a child a loving home…loving parents..loving siblings but unless i can show that i have the funds to raise a child till they are 18 which i can not do… i could afford a child but on paper persay i couldnt. Its a very fine line.

  • We need more people to bring this issue to light

  • Is really sad and if adoption was a a little easier im sure many people would adopt children from here rather than going overseas. Good on Deborrah-Lee for shining light in the issue.

  • Such chilling figures for our own countries children. No doubt many are from disadvantaged communities in regional and remote Australia, as well as urban areas. We really do need to do more for these people and their families. Great awareness campaign.

  • That’s so sad that there are do many children in foster care. The adoption rules in Australia make it do hard for people to adopt

  • My children whom are 21 and 19, did not realise just how hard it is for children to be adopted here in Australia. They were outraged and saddened to think that are so many children out there, needing love and attention and it is not happening quickly enough. Thank god, for the Jackman’s and others like them, trying to change the system.

  • 50,000 kids in foster care? That’s impressive indeed.
I don’t know if I would be a good foster carer.

  • Childhood should be the happiest time in a person’s life, yet so many children never get to feel safe and secure. My heart goes out to them.

  • Wow, I did not realise that there were that many kids up for adoption.

    • I don’t think there are that many for adoption. That’s just how many kids in foster care. Just because they are in foster care doesn’t mean their biological parents will allow them to be adopted. Some kids spend their whole lives in foster care. It’s too sad. Their own parents can’t take care of them but they won’t allow them to be stable and a permanent part of someone else’s family.
