We asked you on Facebook what you use Baking Soda for and here is what you came up with! Who knew it was so versatile?

  1. I clean my oven with bi-carb it works great. It’s also great for vomit as it soaks it up and removes the smell! E. Innes - Facebook
  2. Everything from a relaxing foot bath to cleaning drains and toilets. If you have yucky pet smells on places that just can’t be washed… sprinkle and leave for an hour then vacuum. Pop a bit in your shampoo when your hair gets a product build up. B. Williams – Facebook
  3. I just cleaned my smelly bathroom drains yesterday – 1/2 cup bi-carb followed by 1 cup vinegar, and after a few minutes (it will bubble up madly) a jug of boiling water, it works a treat. You can also use it in a paste to clean bathroom glass. J. Greenwood – Facebook
  4. I use it when bub has nappy rash, pop him in a bath with some bicarb and believe it of not, it helps heaps, takes away redness by morning and most of the rash too. D. Crosby – Facebook
  5. If anyone ever gets burnt, mix bi-carb and water into a paste, put it straight in the affected area, wrap with a bandage and keep putting cold water on bit by bit, helps get rid of the pain and reduce risk of blister. J. Hume – Facebook
  6. Pour it over the tiles in the bathroom & pour vinegar over it & leave it for an hour or 2 then scrub it with a broom & rinse it into a drain or mop it up!! Instant clean grout & tiles!!! S.Walsh – Facebook
  7. Mix with boiled water in a bowl & clean all your silver & gold jewellery, simply soak until water cools & then rinse & dry with paper towel (tarnish comes off on the towel!) S.Walsh – Facebook

  10. Mix into a paste with lemon juice & scrub all your stainless splash backs, stove top & kitchen sink (& all other sinks) it cleans the drains as you rinse with hot water, deodorises & adds a gorgeous shine without scratching!!! S.Walsh – Facebook
  11. Tablespoon of soda where you put the tablets with a cup of vinegar in the bottom to clean your dishwasher and rid nasty smells. Put on hottest wash. F. Yarrow - Facebook
  12. Cleaning the washing machine, 1 scoop in powder dispenser (1-2 Tbls) with 1/2-1 cup vinegar in the drum and run on a hot cycle. Washing machine will sparkle. S. Johnson – Facebook

  • Sprinkle baking soda over a mattress, & leave for a few hours & then vacuum it up has been one of my favorite uses to freshen them. Thanks for all the other ideas!

  • I read somewhere that combining bicarb and vinegar together makes them less effective because of their chemistry (base + acid) cancelling each other out. Apparently if you’re combining them for cleaning you should use them one after the other, not at the same time so they fizz together (not so much for unclogging drains because the chemical reaction helps to unclog them).
    Does anyone have any advice for exactly what they do when cleaning the oven with bicarb?

  • I love using bi card soda in my pans. I boil it away with water before scrubbing them. Clean up so well!!

  • I do use BiCarb but now I have many more uses for it. Thanks for the list, I have printed for further use as I’m sure to forget some of them.

  • So much on the list I use it for. Cleaning the drains, washing machine, toilets, spills ect. Popping it in the bath for nappy rash. My mother in law mixes it with coconut oil and makes a toothpaste from it. So many uses!

  • These are some great tips! I generally just use it for baking, so I love all these other ways to use it.
