Working from home welcomes the freedom and flexibility that’s hard to find when you’re in a traditional office environment.

However, a home office also means you are more prone to distractions and procrastination.

Here are 3 home office ideas to keep you focused and motivated at all times:

1) Welcome natural lighting

One of the greatest luxuries of working from home is the ability to creatively design your office space to your own preferences.

When you’re in a traditional office, you may not get a say in scoring a desk near the window.

However, if you’re setting up a home office, it’s a good idea to pick a spot in your house that welcomes a lot of natural light. Working in a dimly lit or dark room can encourage sleepiness and this in turn, affects your ability to stay focused. As a bonus, embracing natural lighting can also help minimise your electricity bills.

2) Invest in smart and convenient office equipment

Run your home office like you would a professional office. Investing in good quality office equipment like printers and copiers will provide convenience in the long term and can minimise unnecessary stress.

The last thing you need on a busy day is having to run out to a local printer to get something printed or photocopied for a meeting.

Look to trustworthy printer brands that have products designed to maximise the efficiency of your day-to-day work requirements. The stress of a lousy printer can be frustrating, so check out smart printers that can print on demand, at fast speed and can be wirelessly connected.

If your home office is running smoothly from the technical side of things, then you can spend your valuable time staying focused on the work you need to do.

3) Establish a view

Create a home office environment with décor that can inspire and motivate you. Think paintings, illustrations and printed quotes. Invest in aesthetically pleasing productivity tools like calendars, hang corkboards with notes, whiteboards and post it notes.

These tools can help you list your goals, keep you focused and stay on track.

Setting up a home office can be fun and exciting, whether you’re freelancing or working for yourself. The principles behind a productive home office is similar to a traditional office environment, with the added freedom.

A few strategic choices in the set up phase can ensure that you’re running an efficient home office, so that you stay focused and motivated at all times.

  • Its great if you have a study for this sort of thing. When we had a business from home the dining table was my office space.

  • lots of breeze, light, reduce noise and distractions. Be well organised and neat. Have a place for everything essential and a cupboard or storage area for the things that are not. Don’t forget to personalise it just for fun :)

  • I am pretty good with this. I have set up a little office for myself in a kitchen nook. My other alternate is our balcony view which is an immediate view of the inner city with its skyscrapers. While super lovely and I never tire of it, I find I just stare out the window instead of working.

  • Great tips, especially to make it more inviting. Nothing worse than dreading doing something and having to do it in a place that makes you want to run a mile. Thanks for sharing.

  • Our home office could definitiely use some improvement. Not sure it would help me as I’m a chronic procrastinator but it would certainly make the space more inviting.

  • We can tick off the first two in our home office, something we learned the hard way in our home. Number three is a long way off though, as I seem to accumulate huge piles of unnecessary “stuff” that clutter and distract and generally get in the way. Thanks for sharing this list and giving me a little more motivation to work on organising our office better.

  • I would love to be able to work at home and when we designed our house we even planned the space however the opportunity has not yet arisen for me to use it so it has not yet been fitted out. I look forward to being able to do it.

  • Make it visually stimulating. My home office is set up in a spare bedroom but is a fully-fledged office. Everything I need for my work/office is in this space. It’s not a place for my family to come and borrow things from the desk, or put their crap in. It is my office. MY Home Office and they respect that. Everything has its place from filing trays, to filing cabinets, to a wardrobe that hides my stationery, and other work bits. I’ve since completed a makeover to brighten things up and motivate me more.

  • Think it’s important to create a space where you can concentrate. This might look different for everybody. My husband always takes big walks in forest and around lakes do ponder on planning.

  • Hubby was hopeless in his home business – always helping others and the local school and not concentrating on his business. One of the worse things was a lovely view from his window – he daydreamed watching the ships go by.
