A three you old in the UK is having his name legally changed so that he can have a name that suits him better.

Diesel Roberts has been known by the odd nickname “Popcorn” since he was in the womb and now his parents, Huw Roberts and Hazel Williams are apply to have Diesel’s legal name changed and registered as Popcorn Roberts.

According to The Sun Newspaper, the parents named the three year old Diesel on the birth certificate when he was born, but have since decided they want to change it to Popcorn as it is the “Obvious Choice” for the boy.

Dad Huw, 36, told The Sun, “Popcorn, it was the obvious choice. He was a bit of a fighter during Hazel’s pregnancy.  The kicks in the womb were like the popping that happens when you put the corn in the saucepan. It’s stuck ever since that day.’

Diesel himself, who is due to start preschool next year, is also a big fan of his longstanding nickname – so much so that he now refuses to be known by anything else.

Mum Hazel, 37, told The Sun, “We’ve always called him Popcorn. It started off as a nickname but now he won’t answer to anything else. We love the name, it’s fun.  All of our friends call him it and like it too. There are a few people in the family who don’t really agree with it, but I’d rather not discuss them to be honest.”

Diesel is the baby of the Roberts family – he has two older teenage sisters, Paige, 14, and Tyler, 16.

The couple plan to make their son’s new name official next year.  There are currently no other children named Popcorn in the UK.

  • I think legally changing it is a bit far…. He’s only 3, of course he wants his name changed to something cool haha! No reason they can’t keep calling him Popcorn yet waiting til he’s older to decide whether he wants to be called the name permanently. Kids can be cruel in school, too.

  • … I suppose it’s no worse than Apple, or Moxy Crimefighter… But still… A name is with you for life…

  • He’s only three. My little one wanted to be called Turquoise Tangerine when he was three. Keep it as a nickname and if he wants to he can change it when he’s older and a bit more wiser.

  • It makes me wonder what kind of life Popcorn will have. How much of a hindrance will his name be when it comes to his working life, and his relationships?

  • oh for god’s sake – bloody ridiculous

  • Why don’t they just call him popcorn and leave his legal name as it is. It might be cute now but what about in 10 years. What if he becomes a lawyer or doctor, no one would take him seriously.

  • I personally would not bother changing it legally I would just call him it and if he wanted it changed as an adult then he can do it.

  • He can always change his name again when he grows up, if he does not like it? But he may like it?

  • I guess there are no rules about names . He may not like it when he is older though so have they thought of that .

  • I’m not sure this is good parenting. What about when he applies for jobs?

  • Definitely an unusual name for a 3 year old.
