While pregnancy is a time full of joy and excitement, it can also result in a closet full of clothing which simply doesn’t fit.

Once your belly has grown a few inches, you’ll find that both new clothing and a new style are required. But while your new style might need to change to accommodate your new body shape, there’s no reason for you to be out-of-style.

Even at special events and parties, you should be able to look your best.

Follow these tips when choosing an outfit to make you look amazing:

1) Don’t sacrifice comfort

Learning how to handle your pregnant self can be a hassle. Your body may be dealing with a range of emotions and feelings. Chills and hot flashes, laughter and tears, cravings and nausea, all of these make for an exhausting experience.

For this reason it’s important for pregnant mums to make sure that their clothing fits well and is comfortable to wear.

Ditch the stilettos and avoid clothing which is constricting or ill-fitting.

2) Show off your curves

Don’t wear a shapeless dress. Your new curves shouldn’t be hidden, they should be accentuated! Pregnant mum dress up may be a different type of dress up, but it can still be super flattering and fashionable.

Dresses and tops should fit well in the shoulders and should have a high, well-defined waist which sits just above your baby bump. If you want to add extra slimming definition, try adding a belt or sash at this level to define your curves and add shape to your outfit.

When you’re shopping for a dress, you’ll probably notice that there are two different types of skirts. Some dresses are more fitted, with a front that hugs the underside of the belly and becomes a pencil skirt. Others have a loose, full skirt which only defines the top of your baby bump. Both styles are flattering, so your choice largely depends on personal taste.

You don’t need to worry about looking frumpy, because there are plenty of party dress up options for you to choose from.

3) Go shopping online

Depending on where you live and what stores are nearby, you may find that shopping for maternity clothing is a like searching for a needle in a haystack.

Many stores simply don’t carry maternity clothing, and even those that do often don’t have a large selection.

Because of this, the Internet can be a great place to find pregnant fashion. Look for an online dress store with good reviews and a solid reputation to make sure that you’re getting what you want, and order your dress ahead of time so that you have time to try it on and replace it if it doesn’t fit you as you’d hoped.

4) Don’t forget your underthings!

Focusing on choosing the right party dress is fine, but don’t forget about your undergarments. Make sure you have comfy, well-fitting panties and a supportive bra to give you the shape you need.

While shopping for baby items is fun, you should also be able to enjoy shopping for yourself when getting maternity clothing. Splurge on items that make you feel good about yourself, and enjoy the experience of finding your pregnancy fashion style.

  • My sister gave me a beautiful Dress which was great to dress up or down. It was fully lined in Soft Green & the overlay was Pale Green with Pastel Swirls Chiffon. I always felt lovely in it which is great when you can so easily feel frumpy.

  • I never had a huge bump with any of my 3 so didn’t wear maternity until around 6 months, 2 were a month early and 1 to time so 1 comfy dress, 1 pair maternity 3/4 pants and a couple of nice tops did all 3 pregnancies, and no belly showing back in my day, lol.

  • You can wear maternity clothes and look lovely without showing the baby bump off too much. I did not wear maternity clothes till at least 6 months. For my 1st bub mum made me a lovely pair of long black pant and a beautiful matching poncho with a fringe. I LOOKED A MILLION DOLLARS and could dress it up or down, very versatile item in my wardrobe.

  • Maternity clothes are so comfortable, as well as maxi dresses, when pregnant!! I love showing off my baby bump =D made me feel special and honestly, like a woman. Although I wish there was more of a range of maternity clothes in stores such as Target, Big W, K-Mart ect… =)

  • I had a maternity dress, overalls, 2 pairs of trousers and a jumper….that was my pregnancy wardrobe. I was lucky enough to still fit into my normal clothes during pregnancy

  • My mother made me three dresses which I wore constantly from the second trimester onwards. They were old-fashioned and looked like I was wearing tents, but I loved them because Mum had made them for me, and I was comfortable, happy, and didn’t really care what other people thought.

  • Be proud of that bump, don’t be afraid to show it off… but in pregnancy comfort trumps style every time.
