Once people discover the benefits of remedial massage, a common question arises — “How often should I be having a massage?”

The answer is simple. Those who are looking to improve their posture, reduce their chance of injury and maintain mobility benefit greatly from scheduling a massage monthly.

Probably the most important thing to consider is the type of massage that you choose. Although some people benefit greatly from having a relaxing/spa massage in order to improve your overall health, mobility and posture there really needs to be some remedial and therapeutic aspects to the treatment.

Apart from improving your posture, reducing injury and helping keep your body mobile regular remedial massage also has some essential benefits to improve your overall health.

1. It counteracts all that sitting you do.

Unfortunately it is common for us to spend extended periods of time sitting. This position can put excessive strain on your back, hips and shoulders. Not to mention that many of our muscles (hamstrings, glutes, pecs) are in a shortened position while sitting, which causes the muscles to become short and tight.

2. Increases circulation and helps remove toxins.

This is be essential for anyone who experiences poor circulation leading to swollen joints, hands and feet. It is also an important part of recovery for those who are exercising on a regular basis.

3. It improves sleep.

Massage directly influences the body’s production of serotonin, which is essential for the production of melatonin. Leading to better quality sleep.

4. It boosts immunity

A 2010 study found that regular massage significantly boosts patients’ white blood cell count, which plays a large role in defending the body from disease.

Include remedial massage as an important part of your self-care ritual. For those of you who still see remedial massage as an occasional luxury remember remedial massage can be claimed through your private health insurance so consider this when renewing your private health insurance.

  • If I could afford it I certainly would have them all the time.

  • I have just started to get regular massages and I wished I had earlier. My body feels it’s muscles are stretching than relax on completion. Fantastic idea

  • yeah i couldn’t have one every month but it sure sounds beneficial

  • I have one once in a blue moon but not as often as I would like.

  • Ooh, I would love a regular massage. I guess with any pampering, we do it sparingly. I have asked the question of how regularly can I have a facial (about every 6 weeks), but hadn’t considered the regularity of a massage. I’m all for this one.

  • I’d love to be able to have regular massages but unfortunately they’re not cheap. Plus I’d have to drive 2 hours just to get one.

  • The Rolfing remedial massage I had fixed a lower back problem that I had for 20 years only after 2 – 90 minutes treatments. I found a Rolfer therapist who is only working as a remedial massager as Australia has yet to recognise this form of therapy officially. No health funds recognise this therapy. After years of physio, osteopathic, chiropractic and acupuncture that never fix the problem, I am now pain free. I have my 3 monthly tune up at my own expense and it is worth every cent. I am a senior in my 60 decades and not into gyms.
I strongly urge people to give this a go before seeking medical orthopedic treatment that usually results in some form of surgery.

  • Would love to but too expensive.

    • But the idea is lovely and monthly sounds great !!

  • Love the idea, but they are priced way out of my lifestyle costs. $50 or $75 a visit just can’t be justified in our household.

  • make sure your therapist is properly trained to prevent further injury.

  • After reading this article, I will make an extra effort to pamper myself with a massage once a month. Stress affects your skin, eyes, hair and happiness among other things and we should try this simple remedy to be the best we can be for everyone around us.

  • This is something I want to start doing, I agree the cost seems large but I guess if you are healthier from it, then other costs should go down right?!
One question, how long should the massage be? 1/2 hour? 1 hour?

  • even more reasons to have a massage. Shame I didn’t want people massaging me for so long. Also, if these benefits improve your health, then more insurance funds should allow them as a deduction/reimbursement.

  • I notice there is no mention of the average cost. Money doesn’t grow on trees…unfortunately.

    • I have found that cost varies from therapist to therapist.

  • I’ve never had a massage because of the cost.
