We all have things that we could probably get rid of in our house, but there are a few things that is fairly common amongst many households, that frankly, we can do without.

1. Toilet Seat cover and rugs

Why you don’t need it
Toilet seat covers and rugs seem like a great idea. They keep your feet warm during winter and your toilet looking good… or do they? These fluffy items are actually filthy bacterial breeding grounds, where they provide moist warm environments to all different sorts of germs. Every time you flush the toilet, your throw gasoline onto the fire, or germs onto the rug. You essentially putting your feet on a petri dish of bacteria every time you go to the toilet. So throw this away, and wear a pair of socks if the ground really is too cold.

2. Random picture frames

Why you don’t need it
Is your home filled with random picture frames that don’t really go well together? Well maybe you should consider packing them away. A house filled with lots of pictures and frames can make a house look crowded and possibly tacky. Instead, you should choose your most expensive and largest picture frames, and feature them prominently in your home. This draws your attention towards them without making your walls and cupboards appear cluttered.

3. Old curtains

Why you don’t need it
If you have curtains that haven’t been changed since the 70’s, its probably time you consider investing in new ones. Having very old outdated curtains can detract from the look of your home, as your more modern furniture will look jarring against these old fashioned curtains. Updating your curtains is a great way to add a splash of life to your home. Alternatively, if you have a nice window view and rarely use the curtains, get rid of them, it will open up the room and make let in more natural light.

4. Old floral vases

Why you don’t need it
We have all been given a LOT of floral vases as presents throughout the years, but how many do we really use? Get rid of these bulky vases that take up lots of room within your cupboard, and keep one for the odd occasion when you actually get given flowers.

So there you have it, a few things that your home can do without!
Do you have any suggestions for things that people tend to have but really don’t need?

  • Thankfully I have never had toilet seat covers. I always thought these were hideous.
    No old curtains either.
I do have a few random photo frames and 1 vase with flowers on it that was a Christmas gift years ago. I hated it right from the start. Yup…you are right I should ditch that thing.

  • I don’t like using toilet mats for this reason! They just seem yuck to me and I can imagine how many germs are in there!

  • Depending whether the floor tiles in the toilet area are genuinely non-slip you could easily slip on the floor while wearing socks even if the floor is 100% dry.
If your curtains are plain colour – not patterned and still coordinated with floor coverings and furniture you have, they may still be better quality than you can buy now – especially if your window gets either no or very little sun on it.
The pictures/photos/paintings could be re-framed and your areas not look cluttered or much less.

  • Believe it or not, when I left my old job (which I’d had for 30 years) I was given a toilet set which went around the base of the toilet and a mat. Only used it because when the toilet was moved the guy didn’t retile like we asked him to and we needed something to cover the eyesore.

  • This made me laugh as a lot of these items were given to us as gifts for engagement and/or wedding presents, etc. I’ve NEVER had a toilet cover so that made me laugh. When we moved house, I didn’t put out the tens and tens of frames I had previously – I agree that less is more. And those old floral vases, yes… I have started to weed those out and replace them with the ones I actually like!

  • We don’t even have vases — we just use old bottles and jars on the odd occasion that someone brings flowers over!

  • Agree re the curtains, vases and picture frames but the bathroom mats have to stay – the stone tiles are soooo cold in winter that even the cat won’t walk on them.

  • I have the 70’s curtains, well they might be 80’s but I rent and I am not going to spend the money just to make it look better, still functioning.

  • I used to have toilet rugs because I grew up having them at home and did when I left home but since getting a new bathroom I have stopped using them. No idea why just did.

  • These are things I don’t really have in excess. With mismatch frames I just spray paint them the same colour and revamp things

  • We grow heaps of flowers in the garden and nearly always have a few cases of them in the house – no way am I culling vases!! Single use let hen gadgets, now they are something most people seem to have and often never use.

  • Ewww toilet rugs. Very gross. Our curtains do need updating, we are slowly doing one room at a time. Good curtains are expensive.
