We all now that salt is good for bringing out flavour in our delicious cooked dishes, but aside from being the universal flavour enhancer, salt has some other surprising uses.

1. Sanitise sponges

If you don’t properly sanitise your sponges, you really should start right now. Simply letting a sponge dry out will allow harmful bacteria to grow and prosper. You really should be sanitising your sponge the same way that you sanitise dishes. Take a teaspoon of salt, and mix it through some warm water. Allow the sponge to sit in it for 10 minutes, then you can let it air dry. The salty environment draws the moisture away from bacteria, killing them before they can grow.

2. Reduce pain from bee sting

If you have been stung by a bee, there is something you can do to reduce the pain and inflammation. Get a small cup of water and add a pinch of salt. After carefully removing the stinger, apply the salty water and allow to dry. This will ensure that pain is reduced and inflammation isn’t too bad.

3. Create drip free candles

To stop those darn candles from dripping all over the place, soak them in a strong salt solution before their first use for 2-3 hours, and voila, drip free candles!

4. Remove tough stains such as blood, wine and perspiration

Getting rid of tough stains can be a nightmare job, but there is a solution! If you spill wine on your carpet, simply bunch it all together, and pour salt over it to soak up the wine. To remove tough stains, simply soak clothes in cold strong salty water. Follow this with a hot soapy wash.

5. Keep your skin glowing

Add salt to a solution of extra virgin olive oil, and massage over your skin in a circular fashion. The massaging increases blood flow to the skin, the olive oil moisturises and the salt buffs away dead skin cells.
