Hello!

I always get lots of questions before, during and after class. Here are some of the common ones that students are hesitant to ask but often want to know the answer to!

Top 5 questions:

1) Can you see through my yoga pants?

Sometimes. But to be honest, I’m not looking at your yoga pants and neither are the other students in class. I am focussed on making sure your alignment is correct and you are not practising in a way which could result in injury.

2) Why can’t I do inversions when I’ve got my period?

This idea is based on principles on energy flow. There are instructors who believe that during our period the flow of energy is downward, and by inverting and going upside down we reverse the energy flow and this is counter intuitive when we are menstruating. Having said that, there is nothing physically to prevent you from inverting when you have your period. For most of us, we often just feel too tired or sluggish or bloated to invert. But if you feel up to it then do it!

3) Do you judge me when I can’t do a pose, or when I have to rest?

Absolutely not! I know that everyone’s yoga practice is different and that your practice is different from day to day. I don’t care what poses you can or can’t do as long as you are doing what feels right for you and you’re enjoying your yoga practice. I actually admire the students who can let go of their ego and take rest when they need it, rather than doing poses because they think they ‘have to’.

4) Does it gross you out that I’m sweaty and smelly when you come and adjust me?

Not at all! Sure, it’s not the best part of the job but it’s something we deal with everyday. It’s a normal part of practice (and life) so we are used to it and after a while we don’t even notice. If you are worried about it, bring a towel with you to class and we can use that when we adjust you.

5) Is it normal for my lady bits to ‘fart’ during poses?

Yes! This is perfectly normal and is simply the result of air getting trapped during certain poses like inversions. While perfectly normal it can be a little embarrassing so try to engage the pelvic floor when moving in and out of poses to avoid air moving into places where it can get trapped…and then later has to escape.

  • I’ve never done yoga in my life – and after this, don’t think I’ll try. The questions and answers were quite funny – but I only exercise when I have to, but I am reasonably fit and ran 200 metres the other day – I’m 71 and had a hip replacement 6 months ago – so I think I’m doing alright.

  • I’ve never been very good at yoga – I’ve had to find other things.

    • If you want to try yoga again, make sure you find the right instructor. Often we think we’re not ‘good’ at yoga but it’s just that you haven’t found the right style of yoga to suit you.
