While all of us are stuck at home, it’s even more important to get the kids moving. One of our favourite home-iso activities is dancing.

Ballet Time o-founders Ashlee Smale and Samantha Robinson, share the 5 reasons why dancing should be a part of your child’s daily routine.

1) Dancing fosters movement!

And active kids are healthy kids! The beauty of dance is that the training teaches kids so much more than just how to dance. In fact, it fosters skills such as agility, flexibility and co-ordination.

2) Moving Your Body

At a young age, it teaches children about moving their bodies. How? Well in one movement such as a sauté where you spring into the air, students are learning how to bend their knees, spring into the air, and land again. To do this one movement, they need to manipulate levels, planes, and therefore learn sensory awareness of what that actually feels like.

3) Stimulates Intellectual Engagement

There aren’t just physical benefits of learning to dance, in fact it stimulates intellectual engagement. Children observe the steps and try to copy. They also practice consolidation where they learn to piece different moves together. They practice counting, learn words and learn shapes, all whilst supporting movement!

4) Dancing Keeps The Kids Busy

It can give you a little spare time. With the extra time at home at the moment it can be hard to keep the little ones moving as much as they usually would. But, with dance you don’t need a whole lot of space and it can be very easy to introduce little snippets of dance. Online dance company, Ballet Time hosts pre-recorded dance lessons for 2-6 year olds. Their 10 minute dance lessons are delivered to your online portal and mean that you can stream your dance lesson to any smart device, and at any time.

5) Encourages Imagination

Dance fosters imagination and self-expression. Imagination in how children align movement with characters or reflect different components such as a butterfly or a ballerina or even a kangaroo in their practice. Self-expression in the movements they choose to represent themselves or their feelings. Ballet Time classes provide the opportunity to explore these benefits in a safe, supportive, flexible environment of your choosing.

Ballet Time offers a free 1 week trial and hosts monthly ($24.99) or 3 month courses ($70) for 2-6 year olds. For more information on dance supporting your little ones, or to sign up to learn ballet, visit Ballet Time.

  • My daughter does ready set dance and I’ll put my boy in it next year when he turns 2 as he loves to dance.
I don’t know that we would keep up with it at home so being able to go into a studio is definitely preferred.
