For most people, the family car is more than a mere automobile.

Besides being a people mover, the family vehicle often serves as a restaurant, a movie theatre, a pack mule, a wrestling ring and a relaxation chamber.

Because the family car is such a vital part of family members’ lives, you might be hesitant to begin your next car search. However, armed with the right checklist, you don’t have to be afraid.

If you’re looking for the next vehicle to make fond family memories in, consider the following 6 characteristics.

1) Storage Space

Do your family enjoy taking long road trips? Perhaps, your kids play various types of sports; so, you must haul tons of sports equipment to and from ball fields on a regular basis.

If either of these scenarios describes your family, your next vehicle will need to have superior storage space.

While completing your car search, measure the boot space. If needed, bring bats, equipment bags, and suitcases to the dealership with you in order to see if they will fit into a prospective car. Besides boot space, inspect console space as well.

2) Style

While you might be looking for the most reliable car on the market today, you shouldn’t forsake style in the process. In order for you to be happy with a new vehicle for years to come, you need to actually like how it looks. Before visiting a car dealership, browse vehicles on the Internet. You might be astounded at the number of different models, makes, and styles of cars on the market today.

3) Leg room

During a search for a family car, inspecting the leg room in potential vehicles is crucial. This is especially the case if both the front and back sections of the car will routinely be full of passengers. Riding in a vehicle without sufficient legroom for an extended period of time is a guaranteed way to set moods on edge.

4) Technology

When you were a kid, you might have entertained yourself during a road trip by singing, reading, or playing a relaxing game of solitaire. Today’s kids depend wholeheartedly on technological gadgets for entertainment.

Therefore, before purchasing a new vehicle, you should ensure that it contains state-of-the-art technological capabilities.

5) Safety

If you’re looking for a family automobile, car safety features might top your list of priorities.

Before trekking to an automobile dealership, browse through consumer reports and reliable Internet sites for safe cars for kids. Look at car crash test reviews. Review specifications such as airbags and child safety locks for all of the cars you’re interested in shopping for.

6) Petrol mileage

Before purchasing the most reliable car at the dealership, you might want to inquire about its petrol mileage. Because petrol prices have been uncharacteristically high over the past decade, petrol mileage might be extremely important to you. When determining if you can afford to buy a car, you should definitely weigh up the future cost to fill up a vehicle weekly along with the purchase price of the automobile.

Buying a family car can be as nerve-wracking as purchasing a new home for some people. However, it doesn’t have to be. By pondering the above tips, you may be able to drive away from a dealership with the new vehicle of your dreams.

  • I would add check the number of anchorage points and placement. We love our car and the space and safety of it but with 4 kids in child restraints the placement of the anchorage points is a complete pain in the butt.

  • If you think you are going to have more than two kids it’s worthwhile looking into cars that can be converted into 7 seats

  • I found getting us all to sit in the car was a good idea – not just for leg space but for room and comfort between the passengers (one car we tried had a slight mound in the middle back which made it uncomfortable for 3 kids) and also head space. My 16 year old is over 6ft and a couple of cars we tried didn’t give him much headroom at all.

  • One important factor if you are not planning to change your car every few years make sure an adult can fit in the back comfortably if you have the back row of seats as teenagers legs get very long!! most car sales men will convince you kids will fit easily in the back even when you tell them they are bigger than you and you try it and cant easily get in and out without folding yourself in half!! Get PLENTY of room!!
