If you are a first-time parent, you may be wondering why you would bother to buy a nappy bag, when you may already have a large handbag, satchel or backpack that would do the trick.

But let me tell you, nappy bags are worth their weight in gold. Think you can pop out to the shops with bub for just 10 minutes and get back home without needing to take anything with you?

Think again!

That’s exactly when bub will unleash a ‘number three’ that will leave you needing a new nappy, new clothes (possibly for you and for bub…) as well as possibly having to clean up the car seat or pram lining. Imagine that happening without access to the essentials to deal with that kind of disaster?

That is why investing in a nappy bag is essential when preparing for bub’s arrival. Having all the baby essentials on hand will be a lifesaver more than once as your baby grows.

And buying a nappy bag is actually a fun process. Gone are the days of bulky, unsightly bags covered in ducks and cars, there is a whole new world of gorgeous designer bags out there that are also practical, functional and downright chic.

So, what are the reasons why you should scout out a nappy bag of your own?

1. Practicality is a lifesaver

While a standard handbag may have a few pockets here and there, it’s got nothing on a nappy bag. These bad boys have pockets in every nook and cranny, zipped plastic areas for wet clothes and elasticised pockets to hold bottles upright but still able to be whipped out in a flash. Nappy bags literally improve your quality of life by having everything you need on hand and easy to access with one hand if the other one is wrestling with bub on the change table. No rummaging around in the bottom of a bag for you!

2. You can still rock your own style

There is such a wide range of designer nappy bags on the market now, that you can be guaranteed to find the perfect one to suit your style. Whether you are a laid-back satchel type, the hands-free active backpack type or the glammed-up sophisticated type, there is a bag for you. What’s more, when you find a bag you love, you can rock it as a handbag, even when bub has grown up or you venture out for a date with the girls.

3. They are built to last

Durability is a key selling point for many nappy bags. Those made with high-quality leather will undoubtedly stand the test of time and others boast wipe-clean nylons that will ensure they keep their good looks. And this is paramount, when you consider you will be using your nappy bag almost every day for at least two years.

4. Nappy bags are not just for nappies…

As mentioned earlier, when you are out and about sans bub, your nappy bag can be used as a handbag! Or if you choose a backpack style, when your bub becomes a pre-schooler, they can carry it themselves as a kindy or prep bag. The waterproof nature of a lot of nappy bags makes them ideal for taking to swimming lessons, the beach and even the gym and buying a unisex style also means your partner can get in on the action as well.

5. Flexibility

The majority of nappy bags come with pram straps, allowing you to clip your bag onto the pram while out and about, freeing up your hands and taking the load off your shoulders and back. Some are also convertible bags, allowing you to switch from cross-body to shoulder bag, satchel bag or backpack, so you have the flexibility to wear it the most practical way for your planned day out.

6. They are affordable

Considering that they save your sanity and help you to be more organised, nappy bags are one of the most affordable purchases you will make for your life with bub. Even the hottest designer nappy bags that are sure to turn heads and incite nappy bag envy are a great investment when you consider that it will be your daily companion for years ahead.

  • Six children and never used one as they were so bulky. Even with the twins it was still not a good idea to have one. I just dealt with it.

  • Omg! Nappy bags are life! I had both my kids close together so it was definitely much easier to chuck everything into the nappy bag, While trying to juggle 2 kids, had room to put keys, my phone, my purse etc.
Definitely a life saver, and there is so much more of a selection now days!

  • I agree that a quality nappy bag is nessecary. Couldn’t have lived without mine with my first! But with more kids and busier life I’ve changed to a handbag and a tote bag that I now tend to use more often. Having bottle holders (or warmers) as some nappy bags have is definitely handy but not nessecary. Sometimes I’ll have my tote and nappy bag with me. But either way a bag with lots of pockets and compartments are a must.
