No one really thinks about the effects that not changing your child’s pyjamas (or bubs onesie) can cause, but truthfully, there are a few reasons why this should become a healthy habit of yours — regardless how old they are.

Ni’Kesia Pannell shares on ROMPER that of course you don’t have to change your child’s pyjamas nightly, but going more than a day or two without fresh pyjamas can cause some nasty issues.

These seven things will probably make you cringe says Ni’Kesia.

1. Pyjamas are stained with nappy leakage

Keeping your child in their pyjamas may seem convenient to you — especially if you’re lounging around the house — but doing this can see you cleaning baby poop out of them more often. Baby’s nappies leak, regardless of what clothes they wear.

2. Exposure to dangerous Microbes

According to Mother Nature Network, not changing your baby’s pyjamas regularly could result in the buildup of microbes, which can cause disease.

3. Baby acne

Wearing dirty pyjamas can also be a cause of your baby contracting acne. Just like adults, the buildup of bacteria can cause their skin to clog and produce acne, The Huffington Post noted.

4.The smell!

Though you may not see it, baby’s sweat in their sleep. Knowing this, they will start to smell and keeping them in the same pyjamas will heighten the stench.

5. Stains are harder to remove

According to Bustle, keeping your baby in the same pyjamas for too long can make the stains they gather harder to get out. Letting stains sit for days or weeks could require a more extensive removal process or even worse, require you to throw them away.

6. Bacteria and illness

Since there are so many bacteria that cling on to dirty clothes, not changing your child out of their pyjamas can cause them to get sick, too.

7. Risk of developing a rash

Wearing dirty clothes can lead to rashes. The skin can become itchy and irritated due to the oils and dander that get trapped into the fabric.

  • When our kids were babies, we’d change every day and night (more often if there were accidents!). Now it’s every 3 or 4 days.

  • I change my daughters pjs every 2 nights. I’m a bit O.C.D. So I like everything clean!! From clothing and bedding to house and yard.
Good article, thanx for letting me know I’m on the right track. Even if it is a bit overboard.
Another thing I’ve learnt it to cut an onion in half and put half in each room as it draws in all the bad bacteria, I find it works well until I forget to replace them.

  • daily is just the standard and you will go through more than that a day usually! nappy leaks and spit up will be frequent occurrences. Why is this even an article? do we really need to be told about practicing good hygiene for our precious children? you surely change your own clothes at least once a day so how would this be any different for a small child? don’t let laziness creep in

  • I didn’t count how many rompers/ onesies our kids went through as babies per day. They don’t take long to start to smell, including when they are in nappies and there is no leaks

  • With very small kids it seems like a good idea to change everything daily or maximum every 2 days.

  • We changed the Pj’s or onesies daily for our bubs when they were little.
I think how often you change your pj’s depends a little on how sweaty you are and if you wear underwear under your pj’s. We wear our underwear under our pj’s but I know quite some people who remove their underwear when hey put their pj’s on.

  • Always every day and quite often twice a day if they have wriggled too much and got it wet or were crawling about in them.

  • How about the benefit of checking your child for rashes when you change clothes…. this is always the first thing a dr will ask when the Bub is sick

  • We clean every day if he wakes up and they feel a bit damp or every 2 of they feel ok. You can tell right away if they need a wash or not. Its common sense.

  • It’s not only littlies and bubs ….mums PJ’s, dads PJ’s, olderchilden’s PJ’s all need to be washed at least every second day. Think about it you have clean undies every day ..right…your PJ’s do the same job so they deserve cleanliness as well.
