The liver is much like the “mum” of the household. The one that seems to keep it all together with the ability to wear so many hats and always have so many jobs to do.

The liver has a never ending list of tasks to complete and piles of toxins to detox – much like the list of never ending chores around the house and the piles of washing to do. Without proper liver function or detoxification, we start seeing “cracks” in our health.

Apart from the liver doing the detoxification role by eliminating toxins from our body, this amazing organ plays a major role in digestion, cholesterol regulation and our production of bile to help us break down fats and alcohol.

Our liver is very resilient and most of all our liver is capable of regenerating itself given the correct nutrients to do so.

Here are some tips and supplements you can do to help support your liver and assist better detoxification pathways for over all better health:

  • N Acetyl Cysteine. You may need to see a Naturopath for this wonder powder, but it works wonders as an antioxidant, great for liver support and healthy tissue repair. NAC is “the mother of all antioxidants” and crucial to our overall health and used in not only liver detoxification, but pivitol to our over all health and longevity.
  • Drink dandelion root tea. Research has found that 2 cups of dandelion root tea a day stimulates liver detoxification. It tastes best with a splash of soy milk and honey. Drink between meals to support the liver and to help digest meals.
  • Turmeric. Go crazy on turmeric! Turmeric supports liver detoxification as well as being a fantastic anti-inflammatory.
  • Sulphur Rich Foods. Cancer fighting cruciferous vegetables. Keep your vegetable intake high. Specifically, broccoli, brussel sprouts, cabbage, kale and bok choy to improve liver function.
  • Freshly squeezed vegetable juice most days. Fresh juicing is a great way to sneak more veggies into your day and make up for you what you may otherwise miss out on. Please find a detox juice recipe below!
  • Vitamin B12, B6 & B9. These 3 vitamins are some of the most critical supplements to help support liver methylation and detoxification pathways.
  • Drink green tea. Green tea is high in antioxidants and contains compounds that improve liver function, reduce fatty deposits in the liver and repair damaged liver cells. Aim for 1-2 cups per day for improved liver health.

  • The liver is an amazing organ that does an amazing job of looking after itself. I had a fatty liver thanks to a very infected gallbladder. My liver was just getting ready to become cirrhosis but thankfully the cause was discovered just in time. I spent 10 days in hospital 7 of them on various IV antibiotics to get on top of the infection in my gallbladder before I could ahve the surgery to have it removed. Within 6months of the surgery my liver was healthy again.

  • Please, have blood tests to determine your liver function first.
Some people develop hereditary liver problems including diseases which can be aggravated by food high in some nutriments. I can give you one such example. This particular disease is hereditary and more common in people of European descent. Haemochromotosis is also known as Iron Overload Disease. It is aggravated by food with high iron content such as beetroot (listed in the juice recipe above) and in some cases alcohol. I must point out that not all people who develop this disease have ever consumed alcohol. Some symptoms include pain in the region of the liver, and jaundice (yellowing of the skin – orit can go an olive or quite darkish colour) and in severe cases the whites of your eyes will go yellow. In some blood is “taken” regularly. In the early stages hospital admission is sometimes necessary. As the condition improves the regular blood removal is less frequent and hospital admission shouldn’t be needed. It is usually help by an amended diet containing less iron and complete removal of alcohol. My late Uncle had this diesease and later passed away as a result of Liver Cancer. While his disease was really severe he had active Diabetes and a heart problem, both caused no issues when iron levels were under control. His BGL returned to normal of its own accord. Via medical supervision he returned to a sensible non- diabetic diet. He agreed and was part of an intense medical trial to try to find better treatment for all sufferers, and to hopefully to detect it at a much earlier stage. There are other illnesses that can be liver or blood related which some foods thought to be healthy can aggravate.

    • Yes Correct, Hemochomatosis can affect the liver if undiagnosed, however liver enzymes don’t necessarily become affected by this until this disease has been untreated for sometime. A simple blood test for Iron studies looking at serum ferritin and saturation would be sufficient to detect this genetic disease. Many people suffering from haemachromotosis have symptoms associated with this which would naturally lead a health practitioner to be suspicious or in my clinic setting, i would use Live Blood Analysis under the microscope and detect it straight away. Anyone wanting to improve their liver function would still benefit from using the above nutrients for general over all health with out having to seek pathology reports from their GP.
Thanks for the insight into Hemochromatosis as i’m sure many may not have heard of it before. x

  • I also was told that drinking a cup of hot water with lemon first thing in the morning is good for your liver. Do you know if this is true or an old wives tale?

    • Lemon in hot water is great for our health but not necessarily for our Liver. It’s great to kick start our digestive system and helps to keep our bodies alkalised as apposed to having an acidic environment.
A lot of people fear having lemon in their water would mean more acid but lemon actually has a alkalised ash (residue) once we ingest it.
