Want to be happier? Don’t we all? It’s great when the answer to being happy is doing less.

Here are 8 things that the happiest people in the world just flat out don’t do:

1. They don’t criticise.

Happy people don’t criticise others for their actions, unless that criticism is imperative to the person’s well-being, and then they do it lovingly and thoughtfully. Criticising others in an attempt to tear them down is usually a sign of your own insecurities. Happy people care for others, and have no interest in hurting them.

2. They don’t compare.

Happy people are satisfied with their own life choices. They are thankful for what they have, and don’t compare their lifestyle with others.

3. They don’t complain.

Complaining is a symptom of focusing on what you don’t have, rather than what you do. You can never get everything you wish for. Happy people know complaining is never a solution.

4. They don’t live in the past.

Living in the past usually means dwelling on past regrets. Unless it’s informing future choices, it’s a waste of time. Be positive and work hard to create a better future now. Let go of what has already happened. It doesn’t serve you.

5. They don’t try to change others.

Happy people accept their friends and acquaintances for who they are and where they are, without dissatisfaction or frustration. They appreciate the positive.

6. They don’t forget to prioritise personal growth.

They focus on their purpose, their dreams, their daily habits, and their health. By remaining focused, they are able to achieve their goals in life.

7. They don’t worry about people’s judgment.

Happy people really don’t care much what other people think of them. They do what they want and need to do for their own, well-considered reasons, and the approval or disapproval of others doesn’t sway them at all.

8. They don’t overthink.

Happy people recognise that thought spirals are often the root cause of depression, anxiety and stress, and nip them in the bud.

  • I think of myself as a very positive and happy person but I am also an overthinker.

  • Often there needs to be calm discussions to sort out issues that upset each other. We can’t alter our behaviour if we don’t know we may be doing the wrong thing that upsets somebody else. Compromise is often needed. Something that irritates can become a huge emotional issue for some people.

  • Yep, I always say people that bully are just insecure, pathetic and sad.

  • I think we all do this but moderation is key. While it is okay to feel hard done by its important to remember what you have and to focus on your goals not those around you who are seemingly doing better

  • The only thing I do wrong is live in the past as I’m really bad at getting over the death of a close person- family and friends- more so when it’s an accident and I never got to say goodbye. :-(

  • Happy people are calm and have always a smile to others, making other people happy too.

  • I love this post :D As I said on another post recently, I get up in the morning and write down one positive thing about my life and it has changed my world. I also now try very hard to live by the adage “if you don’t have anything nice to say, say nothing at all’. With people I have had personal conflict with, I go out of my way to try and think of and say something nice about them. A few small things makes for a much happier, healthier life

    • Such words of wisdom :-) Might have to add those to my list. Thank you for sharing!

  • Funnily enough, I’ve made a few changes and I’m feeling fairly happy of late, even though I do a few of those things listed above. I have found that doing less, but more of the relaxing things that I really love (and often feel guilty for doing) has made me really happy. Working less. Reading a book in the middle of the day because I can. Having time to prepare meals rather than rush something. These have all made me happier.
