When it comes to family life your home is the centre of the universe – it’s where you spend most of your time, so it makes sense that you want it to feel safe and secure. You also want to know your children can roam freely, no matter how big or little they are, so they too can explore and enjoy their home.

For parents, safety is paramount and while we supervise as much as we can, it’s always nice to feel you have done as much as possible to ensure your kids are safe and sound.

So how do we keep our homes as safe as possible for little ones?

Here are 8 Tips To Make Your Home Safer For Baby

  1. Lock your windows

This is such a simple tip, but you might be surprised how many people don’t always lock their windows. It will help keep people both inside AND out of your home. When you have a little one, they love to explore and if you have a two-storey house you might find they can sneak up stairs quicker than you’ve ever imagined. If your windows are locked, you will feel much more at ease knowing they can’t easily be opened.

  1. Invest in safety gates

There are lots of great safety products on the market, some brilliant and some not. Safety gates are one of the ‘must have’ items you should have on your list – yes, even if you don’t have stairs in your house, gates can help ensure little ones are safe and sound in your home. You can use them to block entrances to kitchens, bathrooms and laundries, keep pets separate to children and even use them to block off the steps to the garage. I’ve found these to be great even as my children have grown older, for example, I can hear the kids opening them so know where they are…. Even if they are up to no good!

  1. Lock cupboards

Find yourself a great child lock at your local baby store and buy 10 of them! You can find ones with magnets, ones that slide, ones that buckle etc. Think about how you’re going to use them and pick the best one for you. Use them

for under the sink, in the kitchen and bathrooms, in laundries, on cupboards filled with breakables and even on the pantry … you never know what ‘treats’ they might help themselves to!

  1. Use eco-friendly products

There is a lot we don’t know about the world of chemicals. Some are great and some can be harmful, though unless you’re a scientist, how do you know the difference?! Luckily the wonderful team at ecostore do lots of investigation so we don’t have to.  That’s a HUGE sigh of relief knowing that you’re using gentle plant and mineral-based ingredients on your little ones when you choose ecostore products.

  1. Get a great permanent marker

Yes. A permanent marker. Keep it out of busy little hands of course (in a cupboard that you’ve locked as per the above point!). A permanent marker will come in handy, especially if you’re suffering a little baby brain (I am STILL blaming baby brain for things). Use your permanent marker to write dates on things like air conditioning filters or smoke alarms. That way, you can always be sure they’re clean and in working order. You don’t want to find out the batteries in your smoke alarm are dead if the need for a smoke alarm ever arises!

  1. Get familiar with where your water mains are located

Another great little tip to help save time in an emergency. If you know where your water mains can be turned off from, you can get there that bit quicker! Every second counts, much like every drop counts. Learn how to turn the mains off and on – sometimes this won’t be as straightforward as you think.

  1. While you’re at it, learn how to shut off power to the house

This one is super important – if something is sparking you want to ensure there is no power coming in! Locate the electricity box and learn how to use it. It could save your lives one day.

  1. Stick something on glass doors

Yep, it’s super simple and whilst we know it might ruin the aesthetic a little, it could save a trip to the doctor’s if/when your little one runs full speed into that door! Whilst this one isn’t as important as say, locating the electricity mains, it will have you resting a little easier as you try to sneak in a quiet cup of tea, away from the noise in the loungeroom!

  • Be aware of furniture that could tip if bub holds on to pull themselves up

  • One of the first things we did was put safety corners on the sharp corners of coffee tables, entertainment units etc. It took about a month and now our darling daughter can pull then off!! We’ve had to decide which furniture is going to be replaced and screw some down! She is not fond of this and she try’s to get them off all the time. At least it keeps her entertained for a while

  • Some good tips here, great ad for Ecostore, but don’t forget to use natural products on yourself too. There are way too many chemicals in the home so being as natural as possible with everything will benefit babies immune system.

  • All good points. At first I was thinking it was going to be buy baby proof items, move things out of their reach etc… which was totally laughable when I had baby number 2! But these tips are ones I never would have thought of! Bit late for me now, but hopefully they will help others!

But that’s super helpful now that I’m aware for when baby starts walking.
