Creative people are great problem solvers, and they can handle any tasks with ease. They are always brave, confident and goal-oriented.

Do you wish your baby has all these personality traits in the future? If you are a caring parent, you can make it happened! If you wonder how to encourage creativity in a child, check the following useful tips.

Set an example

Kids always try to copy behaviour of their parents in every way possible. A little girl tries to wear high heels and makeup, because she wants to look like her beautiful mother. So, if you want your child to become a creative individual, you should set a good example.

Do you have any interesting hobbies? Can you share them with your little one? If you can demonstrate high creativity, then your child will also be able to handle this task.

Support crazy ideas

As a rule, most kids have very bright imaginations and they always come up with the very funny, yet weird ideas. Don’t forget that you are an adult and you have no rights to laugh at your baby. You should be able to discuss the details the hilarious ideas and try to understand son’s/daughter’s point of view.

If you don’t know how to encourage creativity in a child, you should start from being a good listener and supporter. There is no room for a doubt, that your kid will be very happy, if you will be such an attentive parent.

Offer to play new games

What kind of games does your child usually play? Are they aimed at creativity development? If not, you should incorporate some changes in the way your baby spends his time.

Offer your kid the activities, which require vivid imagination. He can watch the clouds and tell you how they look like, make a “soup” of everything he can find in your house, play like a rock star utilizing pans and spoons. All these funny games make a child think outside the box and come up with the brand new ideas.

Avoid micromanagement

If your kid asks permission to iron his T-shirt on his own, let him perform a desirable action. It’s unlikely that your 8 years old son will be able to complete this task perfectly. However, you should let him enjoy the process of learning something new without any critiques from your side.

Even if you will need to iron this T-shirt once more, you should hide this fact from your child. If he will see that you are redoing his piece of work, it will ruin his sense of achievement.

Celebrate small achievements

Every child wants to know that his parents appreciate his achievements. You also want your mum and dad to be proud of you, don’t you? So, your kid should hear laudatory words and get some little gifts from you every time he wins in a game or complete a challenging task successfully.

Positive motivation stimulates child creativity and greatly influences his personality development. You should praise your baby in order to encourage him to try new things no matter what. Your efforts will bear fruits: your kid will grow up a confident, ambitious and goal-oriented individual, which loves his parents with all his heart.

Get closer to nature

Kids are curious about the flora and fauna: they want to know why the sky is blue and how much leaves an oak has. So, if you have no idea how to encourage creativity in a child, you can start by going away from a big city. Go hiking or camping and let your little explorer research this beautiful world.

He will be able to see a lot of new kinds of birds, animals, flowers and insects and learn more about them.   Curiosity goes hand in hand with creativity, so spending one weekend per month in the countryside your child will develop his imagination.

Have fun

Well, your child is still a little human being and he wants to have fun with his friends, watch cartoons and drink milk with cookies. If you ask him to perform boring activities, your efforts will not bring positive results. Make the learning process fascinating and engaging, so your child will enjoy it just as you do.

Take preferences of your child into account

If your daughter likes to play basketball, let her develop the sports talents. Don’t force her to learn ballroom dancing, just because this kind of hobby is more suitable for a little girl. You should respect the preferences of your children and support them in all endeavours.

Don’t be a strict parent

As you know, child creativity is all about the freedom of thoughts and actions. So if you use phrases like “don’t do this”, “never try that” and “keep silence!” too often – you should stop it right now.

When you have so many taboos, you don’t allow your son or daughter to use his/her imagination. For this reason, you shouldn’t be too strict establishing the appropriate rules of behaviour in your family.

Final Thoughts

As a parent, you are responsible for child creativity development. For this reason, you should try your best to teach your little one how to use his imagination and come up with the unordinary solutions. You can be sure that your kid will thank you for your time and efforts spent, when he will grow up.

  • I’ve always been creative, never brace and confident though. I love time with my grandson, we hang out and just do whatever he feels like. We always have fun

  • Micromanagement is confidence destroying for children and adults.

    • And….I agree with having fun – childhood is only for a short time and it needs to be enjoyed.

  • If a child asks to do something make sure they know how to do it. Make sure you show her/him how to do it. Observe at least the first time it is done independently, especially if there is a risk of injury. Just because they ask to do something does not mean you have to say yes if it is something you don’t approve of. There is plenty of age appropriate activities you can do together. As parents not only does the child learn to be creative, we need to be creative too
