As parents, we are always concerned about the safety and comfort of our children. We want them to have the best of everything.

But there are times when we as parents are also busy. Busy with looking for ways to provide for them and juggle that with all the responsibility that we have around the house or our work place.

Every parent will have to decide on what stroller or pram to purchase when they are having a baby, there are a lot of considerations depending on what you will mainly be using the stroller for. Perhaps a daily walk or run,  shopping or just a casual walk to the park.

There are many types of baby strollers available for sale. There are baby strollers with designer labels or generic ones, there are many designs, sizes and colours to choose from.

Here are some helpful tips for selecting the perfect baby stroller:

  • Ensure that the baby stroller fabric is sturdy and balanced. Remember, it is an alternative to holding your baby so you want it to be as comfortable and careful as your arms. Choose a sturdy material so it will last longer as you will have to use it for a few years or more. Make sure that the wheels are also balanced to avoid any wobbles.
  • Minimise, or if possible to avoid, any hard or sharp materials on your baby stroller. Some baby strollers or prams are made of steel, which makes them sturdier, just double check for any hard or sharp surface around the area where your baby will be sitting or lying down.
  • Choose the appropriate stroller that matches your daily activities. If you and your baby love to go out and go around town or the park, you will want to choose a baby stroller with a hood and/or umbrella that is either detachable or foldable. Great for keeping the summer sun off your baby. Or if you plan on walking or running with your stroller you will need to get a more robust pram suitable for this with strong wheels and a strong frame to take the bumps along the way.
  • Choose the baby stroller’s design and colour. This is the best part in buying a baby stroller. Commonly, the design is already on the seat quilted cover or the umbrella of the stroller but these are mostly inclusive when you buy them. Quilted covers can be changed, so this is where you can add the design or pattern you want.
  • Easy to collapse and put up. This is important because when you have finished at the shops or the park, ideally you need a stroller that is simple and quick to put down and pop in the boot.

  • I adore my stroller. It’s so light, under 9kg and folds up so quick and easy. Adjustable handle, sun shade extention, big bucket underneath. Can lay flat for newborn use… Best find!

  • You definitely need extendable handles. Many have handles that are low even fr average height people but you don’t realise that you are bending forward while pushing the stroller.
Definitely not good for your shoulders, neck and back.

  • It’s so much easier having a stroller instead of a massive pram!

  • Lots of great tips in this article. Price, weight, versatility (forward/ rearward facing seat), easy maneuverability, great storage, easy braking – these were all issues we considered when shopping. However I’m not sure that you can ever get one pram that ticks all of your boxes – compromise is a necessity.

  • I can understand about toddlers not wanting to stay in strollers. In the early stages some babies cry because they want to be held, even more so if you are no an uneven surface – especially pavers. Been there, done that. We’ve had the same problems with kids not wanting to sit / stay in the trolley seat, more especially if they are really strong and pull their legs back up while your’re trying to slide them down on the seat to put harness on. grrrrr Personally I would avoid strollers with tyres that have to be blown up. You can easily get punctures and they cost a lot to get repaired if it happens too often. Grass seeds on cement part of footpaths, building materials such nails that aren’t obvious – if they are doing extentions at a shopping centre you can pick them up in the carpark(we did). The undertrays are good for putting bits and pieces in but usually not as deep as we would like. Some strollers have small pockets facing you that you can bottles of water in for yourself or baby.

  • I looked for the following things when buying a stroller: adjustable handles, one break pad, baby could lie flat and that the pram was designed for a second baby/toddler attachment.

Other mothers chose to buy strollers where the baby could face mum and then convert to a forward facing stroller for a toddler. Some also chose prams that could contain a capsule for the baby which could be lifted in and out of the car and house so as not to disturb baby’s sleep.

    • All of these were important to me. My daughter is 3 and still faces me when she is in the pram so we can chat and so I can see what she is up to.

  • Being able to collapse it with one hand can be a godsend.

  • A good size basket and one you can get in and out of your car boot easily.

  • Look out for a good sized basket underneath too. It may not seem that important, but it can come extremely handy for a quick supermarket shop in between feeds in those early days – I was so thankful we got one with a big basket!

    • Me too. My basket always comes in handy.
