Do you have what it takes to be recognised as the head and the leader of your family?

Do you want to be a parent of leaders? I notice a lot of parents struggling with this role, and wondering why most of the time their children are more the ‘boss’ of them, and concerned that no one is listening or following instructions and directions when given.

Whether you are a born leader, or you want to develop the skills and abilities to become one, here is a simple yet powerful method that I use personally and professionally that will help you step up with confidence and passion in your family unit.

First, you must get purposeful and intentional. Know what is important, why it is important and what needs to happen to get the results you want. All significant achievements throughout history are attributed to those with powerful dreams; as emotions and feelings are major motivators. Without a cause, purpose and direction there is no excitement or buy in from others, or the focus to hang in there for you.

Once you have a firm vision and plan of action you can now A.I.M to be an excellent leader in your family. AIM stands for –

A – Attitude and Approach

I – Inspire and Influence

M – Meaningful connections

Without the right attitude and approach, you will be unsuccessful in leading others. People are drawn to those that they feel good around and who they can trust. In our fast-paced world, those that are mostly positive and calm will find that others will want to spend more time with them and support their vision. Therefore, it is important as a leader to check your attitude and approach.

Are you projecting a positive outlook, being open and trustworthy, being respectful and walking your talk? People, little or big, will notice if your integrity is off, and most get that uncomfortable feeling within the first few minutes of spending time with you. Always make sure your attitude and approach is aligned with what you want and believe, and then even if others don’t buy in to your vision or direction they will respect you.

Great leaders inspire and influence. They inspire by their actions, energy and innovative thinking; and they influence by supporting and guiding. People are drawn to and feel good around inspirational people.

Inspiring leaders are always moving towards something, and manage to convince others, through their own passion and dedication, that it is something exciting and they can be a part of it too.

Their conversations are positive, informative and empowering, and always promoting improvement in others and themselves. When inspired, the possibilities are endless. Nurture that in your family members and you will easily create a team that will help you get the results you want.

A supportive network of people – family, friends, colleagues and collaborators – is the source of success for any leader. Creating an enthusiastic team is where your effective leadership will be measured.

Setting the example of showing up, listening openly, communicating well and encouragement will create a productive and proud family team of players. If you want to be recognised as a leader in your family and friend group, the key ingredients are trustworthiness, communication, confidence.

Partners in success is what every great leader aims for. Family is the ultimate team when working together and being led by a strong, gentle and reliable parent. People instinctively react in a positive way to people that show them that they matter and that their role is important.

So, the last tips for your leaderships success are –

  •       That your leadership approach is always consistent,
  •       Learning and sharing what you know is a priority,
  •       You are enthusiastic and passionate about your vision, and
  •       You continuously encourage and support those in your family that you lead.

  • I am and always have been the leader in my house. I make all the big decisions and do all the big jobs

  • When I was working, if I got given 4 or 5 jobs to do at the same time( love it when people walk in the door practically one behind the other) I would suddenly think “where do I start?” I would loved to be able to put a “closed” sign on the door for an hour or so before the next person came in with another arm full of paperwork. No wonder I went home exhausted some nights and struggled with family activities

    • A good system is getting people to book in time to see you regarding work – then the time is allocated for that work.
