An episode of the children’s show Peppa Pig has been banned from Australian TV for telling children spiders “can’t hurt you”.

Parents complained the message was inappropriate and encouraged children to play with dangerous creatures, according to the Sun.

It’s the second time the 2004 episode Mister Skinny Legs has been taken down after it was removed from the internet in 2012.

Peppa Pig is directed and produced in the UK, which has less deadly spiders than Australia.

According to The Evening Standard, the episode is about how a terrified Peppa Pig is told by her dad spiders “can’t hurt you”.

Peppa then picks the spider up and tucks it into bed.

“We are all going to have tea with Mister Skinny Leg,” Peppa tells her father.

ABC banned the show but it was aired again on Nickelodeon channel Nick Jr on August 25.

Do you think it is an over reaction considering Peppa’s friends include a Zebra, Elephant, Mr Bull and even a Lion among others?

  • I think I’m sitting on the fence about this one. Parents should eb around to have the conversation with their children that we have dangerous spiders too… but at the same time, if the parents don’t have this conversation then this could be potentially bad!

  • I’m sure that concerned parents could explain to their little ones that it is a show on TV and spiders like leopards and lions and zebras and elephants and bulls are things we play with. Children have to be taught so they learn what is and isn’t true.

  • I don’t think this is bad enough to ban the episode??

  • The spider looks like a daddy long legs – a healthy respect for all animals with a commonsense approach; but banning – sigh!

  • It is a slight over reaction to the show.

  • I don’t think it’s a big deal. Children need to be taught that all animals can pose a risk so they need to be careful.

  • I understand the concern, but I don’t think this is a major risk for kids, really.

  • It depends how you act with spiders in your house I think. For example I cry and hyperventilate while I attempt to burn my house down so I know it’ll be dead. And so my son has learned that spiders come from the depths of hell to eat us and wont go near them no matter what pepper and daddy pig do. Normal people might just put them outside and get on with their life and their kids might not have “the fear” that stops them playing with spiders.

  • Yes, I think indeed it’s a bit of an over reaction considering Peppa’s friends include a Zebra, Elephant, Mr Bull and even a Lion among others. I think you can use the show to start talking about less dangerous and more dangerous spiders.

  • Do you think it is an over reaction considering Peppa’s friends include a Zebra, Elephant, Mr Bull and even a Lion among others? lol I think you may have answered your own question! – but yes I think it is fine to encourage children not to be petrified of spiders – but to encourage them to be aware that some are dangerous and it is best to leave them all alone, and perhaps not invite them to tea!

Banning the show though is a bit silly, there are lots of things that Peppa does that I don’t agree with but my daughter loved the show when she was little so I let it slide, my girls know that I am not going to let them go outside and jump in muddy puddles just because Peppa is doing it!
