Surrogacy, it’s a subject that is often avoided.

I want to get our story out there, I want women who are struggling with the fact that they may never carry their own child to have hope and know that they are not alone.

I have an older sister, she’s been through a lot as she was born with Hershprungs Disease. From the day she was born, she’s had multiple surgeries, but she has never let this get her down and that’s why she’s the strongest person I know and someone I look up to. I am 23 years old, a mother to 2 beautiful children and a wife to an amazing man. A few years ago my sister made the big decision to start her own little family with her husband. After multiple rounds of failed IVF, hospital visits and heartache, she was informed that she could not carry her own child. As you can imagine, this broke her and her husband’s hearts.

After thinking about it for months and asking my husband what he thought, who’s response was always ‘if you are happy I am happy,’

I decided to offer to be my sisters surrogate, after all this was going to be 9 months out of my life to give my sister a life time of happiness and love. I couldn’t imagine not having my children in my life.

A few months later, using my sister and brother-in-law’s embryo, we had one failed transfer resulting in miscarriage, but the second transfer was successful and we were pregnant! I’ll never forget the look on my sister and brother-in-law’s faces when they saw their baby’s heart beating away for the first time! A few weeks later, I found out I was carrying a baby girl, a gender reveal party was on the cards and when they saw those pink balloons float up out of the box they both cried happy tears; another moment I’ll never forget.

The pregnancy was all smooth sailing and full of amazing and happy times. Aimee and I spoke on the phone every day, but the best phone call I’ll always remember is when I rang Aimee at 3am on the 18th of March and asked her, ‘are you ready?’

Even though it was close to the due date, I don’t think you’re ever ‘ready’, but the moment they laid eyes on their baby girl I could tell that they forgot about all of the heart ache, sad times and struggles as they soaked up this little miracle named Francesca Louise.

My niece is now 5 months old and is a happy, healthy and very beautiful little girl, my sister and brother-in-law are proud parents and loving every minute of parenthood, and my children love their new cousin. I’ll forever cherish the amazing moments I shared with my sister, but my favourite is the moment I handed Francesca to Jake and Aimee for the first time, because I got to see them in a very real and very raw moment as they fell in love with their daughter.

I have since been asked over and over again if I am okay, how I am coping and if I am sad that I couldn’t keep the baby. I am more than okay, I got to give my sister the gift of life, I gained another beautiful niece.

I got to see my sister get closure after a lot of heart ache and I now get to watch my sister be a mummy (an amazing mummy at that). Surrogacy sure is amazing!

  • The woman that are able to do this are amazing. I know that I wouldnt have ever been able to do something like this as I would be way too attached to the baby.

  • I love the photograph to this lovely story -it is so real. I don’t think I could be a surrogate but I deeply admire those women who do.

  • This is a fantastic and uplifting story. Not for everyone, I don’t think I could have done surrogacy within my own family, but would have needed to use someone separate and unrelated. I’ve been through IVF so I understand the desperate need for a child and the lengths that people will go to. The end result to this was fantastic.

  • How wonderful that you could do this for your sister – such a bond between your families forever and ever. Being so young, I amazed that you didn’t have feelings for the child you carried for someone else, so am so pleased it worked out well. Good on you.

  • What a wonderful gift you have given to your sister and brother-in-law. It’s so admirable! The baby is genetically theirs, having all their DNA. Both you and your husband should be congratulated for such selfless act. This niece will have a special place in your lives. Enjoy the special bonds all of you. Take xare and God bless you all.

  • Possibly the most difficult next step is / was explaining the baby not going home with you to your other children, especially the elder one who would be more aware of the situation.

    • Hi there. Thank you ☺️
Surprisingly that was the easiest part. My littlest child obviously never understood anyway but my 4 year old is very close with her aunty/my sister so she would always say to me “mummy this baby is aunty aims and not going to live with us but will live at Aimee’s” and she always tells people she has a new cousin ☺️ I think my daughter would have been more upset if it were my baby and it was living with us ☺️

  • I am so happy for all of you. You gave your sister and brother-in-law a beautiful happy baby girl….and gained yourself a beautiful happy niece.
You now sit back and watch them grow as a family and how they raise her.

  • What a great sister you are! I was unable to do the same for my sister and fortunately after a donated egg she was able to carry to full term and I also have a gorgeous little niece that is 5 months old. Such a precious gift.
