Aiia Maasarwe’s accused killer was granted bail three times in the months before he allegedly raped and murdered the Israeli student.

Codey Herrmann was first released in August after he was hauled before a court on charges of car theft, careless driving, and driving without an instructor, shares Daily Mail.

The 20-year-old was then charged with causing criminal damage on December 16, and committing an indictable while on bail.

His bail was extended and a hearing set for December 20 in the Heidelberg Magistrate’s Court, but he failed to show up, court records show.

He was arrested him on a bench warrant on December 29, but instead of being locked up, he was granted bail a third time, according to The Australian.

The accused faced Melbourne Magistrate’s Court charged with raping and murdering Ms Maasarwe, 21, as she walked home from the tram on January 16.

The La Trobe University exchange student’s body was found half-naked near the Polaris Shopping Centre, in Bundoora, the next morning.

Herrmann made no application for bail at Monday’s brief hearing, during which the prosecutor withdrew an application for a compulsory procedure, likely a DNA sample.

Prosecutor Jonathan McCarthy requested specific details of the alleged attack on the Palestinian Arab of Israeli citizenship be withheld until police have been able to give them to the 21-year-old’s family.

‘The informant wishes to have that dealt with in a sensitive manner before it’s given to the media,’ he said.

Magistrate Jonathan Klestadt approved the move because it would be ‘confronting’ for the family to be made aware of details through media reports.

  • Bail makes no sense to me. So many people commiting more crimes while out on bail.

  • Regardless of whether it is an injury or murder, the next of kin must be notified before the media can release any details. I know a guy who was bashed up really badly in an undercover carpark by guys attempting to break into a car. He and his friend did not go near the offenders at all. They raced behind the guy I know and pushed him onto the ground then “smashed” his face and broke bones in other parts of his body. A TV Station showed him being put on an ambulance stretcher, then wheeled into emergency at the hospital nearby on the News. His sister found out when she barely recognised him by the home knitted jumper her was wearing. Initially the Hospital wouldn’t tell his family under privacy laws. Imagine how his family felt being him on TV before the Police notified them. He had ID License and other documents still with him when he arrived at the hospital.

  • I sometimes think the death penalty should be brought back. Why was this creep granted bail the first time. The taxpayer will be paying for his ‘living’ expenses now for the next 20 years or so until he is granted his freedom to commit another crime.

  • I don’t understand why the judiciary always have a soft corner towards criminals. They need to send out strong message so that people think hundred times before committing a crime but in most of the cases the verdict is delivered as a most lenient punishment, always. Fed up of slap on wrists.

  • I’m so angered by this kind of injustice. A beautiful, intelligent woman gone, and a worthless **** still here and being fed and looked after at tax payers’ expense. What a world!

  • I can’t believe this would happen. If they had locked him up when they executed the bench warrant Aiia would still be here.

  • Legal system is a bit of a joke in all areas. Sad.

    • Fully agree with you

  • That’s our legal system for you! This idiot was laughing in our faces seeing how much he could get away with and it cost someone their life!

  • I am so sick of these loonies being granted bail continuously for crimes then they go on to rape and murder an innocent woman. So many women would still be alive today if the justice system did their job properly!

  • I wish the media would stop reporting about the ‘shocking detalis of Aiia’s death that can’t be released’. It only conjures up worse fear than we already have. We do not need to know the intimate details. That should be private and shared only with her family, and treated privately in court. We need to show respect and not provide this man with the fame he is getting.

  • This sounds so much like the other cases that have happened here in Melbourne – all of them out on bail – can someone in government/operational areas do something?

  • Where is the duty of care of the justice system. He missed a court appearance surely that is enough to hold him. The innocent always seem to be the ones that suffer. Those who do wrong seem to get chance after chance after chance. Nothing changes. Maybe a royal commission into the justice system might look at the faults and do something about them. This seems to happen all too often.

  • why would someone this evil be granted bail a 3rd time?

  • I think the system needs to change and have to introduce new tougher laws so criminals are locked up not released on bail.

  • The poor family I hope there is justice for their beautiful daughter and he isn’t allowed out to do this to someone else.
