Hello!

I often find myself doing a toe-tapping dance to some Golden Oldie piped through the speakers as I pick out my carrots at Woolies. But there’s no messing around with frivolous jigs at no-nonsense Aldi. In this discount store, you may not have even noticed, but there is no music to hum along to.

I love going to the supermarket in the run-up to Christmas. There’s something festive about filling up your trolley to the tune of Jingle Bells. But shopping at Aldi over the festive season, it’s ‘Silent Night’ all round.

To be honest, I hadn’t even noticed the lack of music at Aldi. The overriding chatter of shoppers, the clatter of trolleys and the tussles over the Special Buys means that there is a constant hum in the air.

No Music

But an eagle-eared Aldi fan alerted us to the lack of music in an Aldi facebook group.

“Why don’t they play music in Aldi? I never realised till now,” she wondered on the Aldi Mums Facebook Group.

‘I Hadn’t Even Noticed!’

The post generated a buzz of activity, with many shoppers amazed that they had never even noticed the lack of music.

Many were quick to offer suggestions for reasons for the lack of tunes.

Get In And Get Out

“They want us to buy and get the hell out of there ASAP,” said one.

Another shopper agreed:

“Music is to make you linger and forget what you came in for. No music means you get in and get out without thinking whether you really need a chainsaw or a violin from the middle aisle!”

It’s A Cost Issue

Others cited the cost factor for the music-less environment.

“To play music in a commercial setting, you have to pay royalties. You also have to invest in the sound equipment and someone to maintain it,” read one comment.

“If a store is over 2,000 square feet they must obtain an APRA license to play music,” suggested another.

We Love It!

A few mums are big fans of the no-music policy.

“I love it. Very sensory friendly no music, lights are dimmer, not loud calling out over the microphone every few minutes. Best shop to take ASD littlies,” one mum explained.

“I shop at Aldi BECAUSE they don’t play music. I also go there because they use lower lighting and I can shop in PEACE,” said another.

What Does Aldi Say?

It turns out many of the suggestions who indeed correct. 9Honey chatted to Aldi to get to the bottom of the sounds of silence.

“We have always said we are different to other retailers – we think, Good Different,” an ALDI Australia spokesperson said in a statement.

“We pride ourselves on saving our customers’ time and money, and we are able to achieve this by removing unnecessary features and costs from our stores such as music. This has allowed us to create a simple, affordable and more efficient shopping experience for our customers.”

“While our customers won’t be singing along to music in our stores, we hope they’ll be singing praises about the money they’re saving!”

So you might want to bring along your airpods next time you shop at Aldi so you can make your own music.

  • I dont shop at Aldi and have only been there a couple of times. There is not a store near me

  • Honestly never even noticed!
I don’t mind either way as most of the time I’m not paying attention as I’m so engrossed with trying to find everything on my grocery list.

  • I have to say it is nice not to hear the phone ring or the people yelling over the speaker as they wear head sets.

  • Aldi for the win. I don’t mind that there’s no music

  • I had never really noticed before but thats only because when I go to the shops I completely block out everything so I can concentrate. I don’t ever heard the music in the shops unless if they have it up ridiculously loud and you cant hear yourself think and you have to yell to talk.

  • How interesting that most people haven’t even noticed the lack of music. I would be happy for all supermarkets to do this and save us a bit of money. If we don’t notice why have it?

  • I actually don’t notice music playing in any supermarket, I’m too focused on what I need, and getting in and out as quickly as possible!

  • I’ve never shopped at Aldi’s but I’ve never noticed music playing in any other store either.

  • Have to admit I do like the play list in our local Coles, but can’t say I always notice it. When I do notice it, it doesn’t slow down my shopping. I’m in andoit in record time regardless

  • Nice not to be bombarded with sounds esp. for those with autism.

    Reply

  • I have friends and teachers who have autistic people learning basic skills like shopping and environmental choice. They choose Aldi’s because they do not have loud music, wide aisles this helps
with people in wheel-chairs and they love it! Some people hate loud shopping centres as its a overload of sensory processing disorders such as touch, sight, hearing, smell. I like Aldi shops where you drive into their own car park shop and leave. My friend who has anxiety loves shopping at Aldi’s as she can get everything in one small shop.
