Hello!

If you’ve breastfed your children with absolutely no problems at all, you may find this post a little off-putting. If you’re like thousands of mums the World over who struggle to breastfeed their children, you might actually take a moment to consider the merits of Alicia Silverstone’s newest idea – a breast milk sharing program.

You may remember Alicia taking to the internet posting a video of herself transferring chewed food into her son’s mouth – the video went viral and people (the haters in particular) went crazy!  So we’re wondering what their reaction is going to be to her latest idea of a breastmilk sharing program.

In a recent blog on her site The Kind Life Alicia talks about how an email from a girlfriend, beside herself because she couldn’t breastfeed, has prompted her to launch Kind Mama Milk Share aimed at connecting mums and allowing donating mums to play a part in bringing healthful breast milk to mums who truly value the nutritional value of milk but can’t breastfeed themselves.

She’s discovering it’s no easy quest – even if you do find mums who would willingly donate their breastmilk via a properly administered program, it’s hard to guage the quality of the milk.  If you’ve read anything about Silverstone, you’ll know she’s vegan and very committed to pure living, whole foods and animal protection.  So obviously any programme that she endorses isn’t going to be letting mums who’ve had some sneaky chocolate or a few of the kids fries into the programme!  Although without a ‘fasting blood test’ prior to donating, we’re not quite sure how easy it would be to detect any diet transgressions in the donating mums.

Good luck Alicia – your intentions are pure.  We know there are hundreds of mums who’d probably rather load up their trollies with pure breastmilk from beautiful mums.  However we’ll watch with interest to see if you can make your way past all the nay-sayers to get this off the ground.

What do you think? If you had plenty of breastmilk, would you share with others?  If you had none, would you consider using breastmilk from another mum?

  • A lovely idea. It must be so disheartening to not feed your baby the way you hoped, and I’m sure there would be many who would love this idea.
Also… I have no idea about that viral video and have no interest looking for it haha

  • I’d donate my milk if there was a proper set up to do so.

  • i don’t think that i could do this. breast is best though. i wonder how many people will try to get some milk in the hopes that they get alicia’s lol

  • It’s interesting that we would much prefer to give our babies milk from a cow than from a human who makes milk perfectly designed for their bodies. Its a struggle to get our head around the thought of ‘bodily fluids’ I guess.

  • I really don’t like that idea some ppl mite but I would only give my son mine and no one else

  • My grandmother fed two other babies while in the hospital with my Mum, apparently she had a huge amount of milk and the other Mums didn’t.

  • No and no and no point in trying to reinvent the wheel. Wet nursing has been around for years and what Alicia has proposed has already been happening.

  • The sister of a lady I worked with had a premature baby, The Mum was expressing milk and taking it to the hospital every day as the baby was in a special crib and she wasn’t allowed to handle her for long enough to feed her. She was able to express much more than her baby needed. There were a couple of other babies whose mothers were unable to supply any milk at all. The manager of the Neonatal Unit approached her to ask if she cwould give permission for them to screen her milk and her donate some for the other babies who would benefit from it. She agreed as she was wasting some besides the surplus she was taking in each day. They even gave her a supply of bottles to put it in.
Under such circumstances and the fact that the breastmilk was screened constantly I thought it was a good idea and is possibly still done via that method.

  • I’d share my breast milk with others but I don’t know that I’d use anyone else’s breast milk for my children

  • I had to express with my first born, feeding was too painful

  • You’d have to be certain the donators of the milk weren’t on drugs or had any diseases though!

  • The Mercy Hospital in Melbourne were taking donations at least 3 years ago

  • I think this is a great Idea, I always had heaps of milk. I would have donated my milk if i could because I would be devastated if I could not have breastfed my son.
