Hello!

The world has gone mad. Not only are supermarket shelves completely depleted but now Woolworths and Coles are severely restricting home delivery and grocery pick-up services, leaving customers with very little option to re-fill the pantry.

Earlier this week, Coles announced that they would be suspending nationwide home delivery except for the most vulnerable customers so it can focus on keeping stores stocked. In addition, the company is hiring 5,000 new workers, including delivery drivers, to keep up with the demand.

Woolworths also announced that all click and collect services will be suspended and deliveries in parts of Victoria have been stopped.

Woolworths Suspends Home Delivery

However, it now seems that Woolworths delivery services have now been suspended across the country, except for those in need.

In a statement, Woolworths Managing Director, Amanda Bardwell said that during this challenging time “we are giving priority access to our most vulnerable customers including seniors, people with a disability and those in mandatory isolation.”

Only “once these vulnerable customers have been given first access, we are providing online deliveries to our valued customers where we can.”

Expect Cancellations of Orders

The supermarket has warned customers to expect wide-spread cancellation of orders:

“Significant item shortages in store along with unprecedented demand for home delivery and Pick up services have unfortunately resulted in some customer orders being cancelled. We took this decision at the earliest possible point given the high level of items out of stock.”

Woolworths have emphasised that their most vulnerable customers, including seniors, people with a disability and those in mandatory isolation are getting home delivery priority. Those customers who fall into these categories, can apply to receive Priority Assistance by completing a form.

The supermarket has said that they have “temporarily suspended our usual delivery operations out of selected Australian supermarkets until further notice” but will  “look to resume our usual delivery operations out of our supermarkets as soon as possible.”

Pick up services are still not available due to low stock of items.

We tried to make an order last night on the Woolworths website and there are absolutely zero delivery windows available – I wonder how long this will go on for?

What Now?

So what do we do?  If you don’t fall into the ‘needy’ category but still have a family with hungry kids to feed, what do you do?

How are you keeping food on the table with all these restrictions and suspension of home delivery and pick up services?

  • SO funny reading these articles now.
I was fine as I was well stocked before covid hit. My husband was battling cancer so I had to make sure the cupboards were well stocked as I never knew when I was going to be able to get to the supermarket.

  • Interesting to look back on this now, and what was done and what could be done better in the future. It was extremely hard for seniors, especially if limited support and mobility.

  • This was an awful fiasco – meant I just went shopping as usual and hoped for the best rather than being safe and at home like everyone wanted me to do.

  • Just doing my normal weekly shop and substituting where I can’t get what I want

  • I think they’d be better off having more online and less in store. They could monitor who is ordering what and who is coming back day after day and ordering bulk. Took my 3 year old and 7 month old in to shop. Very hard. Didn’t want to risk putting them in trolley with germs so had the double pram and could only get what I could manage to carry in a basket while pushing the double pram.

  • Yes it’s not good especially for the elderly, but for everyone else I think it makes it fair

  • It’s kinda double edged. If products are limited to how much you can buy, then some people will just need to go to the supermarket more often. But we need the limits in place for those that are going overboard and stockpiling essentials, making it impossible for others to even buy any

  • We have enough food in our pantry and freezer to keep us going for a few weeks. We just might need to be creative with what we eat and eat more simply.

  • I’m trying to minimise how much I go out – a bit hard when you cant have your groceries delivered

  • It’s adding to the problem having to go several times a week to get enough food etc for your family. But I understand why they’ve put restrictions on, due to panic buying

  • We’re lucky that we are relatively well stocked at home with overstocking/hoarding. It will be interesting to see how long what I think is a lot of food actually lasts.

  • thankfully I work just above a supermarket so I can always pop in daily and top up what we need. It’s a shame that they stopped online I think they could have managed the quantities of stock better with online shopping and be able to actually enforce the limits. But these things happen. The bare shelves are a bit of a challenge but it makes you look at the products that are left and see how creative in the kitchen one can be with limited options!

  • Luckily I’d just done my monthly shop when they put up the restrictions. I like to use click and collect because I can’t walk around the store due to health issues. We’ll just have to get by on what we have in the freezer and in the cupboards until things calm down. We can last about 3 weeks before I have to start panicking.

  • We are just going with what we can get

  • It makes sense given the low supply and high demand
