Earlier this week a video showing distressing footage of a 5 week old baby battling whooping cough shocked the nation.

Mum of two, Sandra, said she shared it to help ‘educate more people on the importance of vaccinations.

Sandra wrote: “This video may distress some people but I’m sharing to show just how scary and dangerous whooping cough is to babies who are too young to be vaccinated. This is my 5 week old baby during an episode where she chokes and stops breathing. Babies rely on herd immunity to keep them safe and unfortunately we cannot achieve that without high vaccination rates. Whooping cough is not always a loud obvious cough. The scary symptom for babies is when they don’t cough but silently choke and turn blue/purple from lack of oxygen. If we weren’t in hospital and sitting watching our baby 24/7 the outcome would be fatal. Please don’t ignore the warning signs- our baby girl only had a slight cough to start. Please share this to educate more people on the importance of vaccinations.”

Sadly since sharing the video, Sandra and her husband have been receiving angry messages from infuriated anti-vaxxer parents.

‘You read a lot of scary things online about whether vaccinations are or are not safe, but you have your child in hospital stop breathing and you’ll change you view in about 10 seconds,’ Mrs Tee told 7 News.

‘Once you look at the video of our little girl, there’s just absolutely no way you could risk that happening to them.’

Mr Tee echoed his wife’s sentiments, saying: ‘For those people who don’t believe in vaccination, here’s the proof. (Refusing to vaccinate) is putting little tiny 2.6kg babies at risk. I wouldn’t want that on my conscience.’

‘Babies rely on herd immunity to keep them safe and unfortunately we cannot achieve that without high vaccination rates,’ she said.

‘Whooping cough is not always a loud obvious cough,’ the new mum explained.

‘The scary symptom for babies is when they don’t cough but silently choke and turn blue/purple from lack of oxygen.

For this reason, Ms Tee said she and her husband are currently in hospital watching their baby ’24/7′ and giving her oxygen when needed.

‘Please don’t ignore the warning signs’, Ms Tee urged. ‘Our baby girl only had a slight cough to start.

‘I want people to be aware of how fast babies go downhill with whooping cough,’ Ms Tee told Daily Mail Australia.

  • I think everyone needs to be educated on what whooping cough can sound like, especially GP’s. My baby was 8 weeks when he got it. Two different GP’s told me he was fine, his cough was nothing. The third doctor I took him to even asked if he was my first child insinuating I was overreacting and an irrational new mum. She only tested him for whooping cough to shut me up.

  • This video does need to be shared. Maybe then some of the anti vaxxers will vaccinated

  • We need more children to continue to be vaccinated and then the problems will not occur as often. It’s called the herd syndrome. If almost all the herd has been vaccinated, then no one gets the disease.

  • There has been a few cases of Whooping Cough reported in the last year or so. Not all of the babies survived, and this family is being accused of propoganda. I think the wrong people are being accued of that.

  • Anti-vaxxers are fortunate that most parents are sensible and vaccinate their children thereby reducing the prolifirence of these diseases and making it safer for all children. I hope Mr and Mrs Tee ignore the ignorant anti-vaxxer rants. I also hope their baby girl gets better soon.

  • I can imagine this is sensible for the parents, but you can’t blame the anti-vaxxers.
Like flu, whooping cough is always present in the community, with outbreaks occurring every three to four years. The best way to protect yourself against whooping cough is to be vaccinated, and ensure your vaccinations are up to date, but research suggests that 4 to 12 years after having the initial vaccinations our immunity to the disease may have worn off. The daughter of my neighbour was several time hospitalized at primary school age because of whooping cough and was immunized. There is some suggestion that you are much less likely to pass the disease on to your nearest and dearest when you’re immunized but it is not guaranteed.

    • Maybe that little girl had other factors resulting in her hospitalisation. Such as weakened immune system or lowered lung function. Immunisations don’t always guarantee you don’t catch these diseases but you will have reduced symptoms and length
