We all want to create a safe and happy environment for our children at home.

Fire alarms, stair gates, and window barriers are just a few of the precautions you can take to avoid unnecessary injury or harm. But you should also look to ensure the safety of your children when it comes to your window coverings’ cords.

One of the most sophisticated ways to ensure window coverings are safe for children is to opt for motorised operated blinds, and other innovative cordless blinds such as the Luxaflex DUETTE® LiteRise Shades.

However the following simple, precautionary steps can be adopted by all parents to ensure the safety of their children and pets when it comes to blinds and awnings.

1. Check your blind and curtain cords

Check your blinds are genuine LUXAFLEX® Window Fashions and have been installed correctly with Child Safety Cords and Cleats, if they are corded window coverings. You should do this in your home and also when on holiday, when staying with friends and relatives and if renting.

Check for loose or looped cords that your child can reach from the floor, or by climbing on furniture.

2. Secure loose cords out of reach

Check if your blinds or shades have been installed with compliant child safety devices. It is important to note, that all LUXAFLEX® Window fashions will be supplied with such devices to ensure your children are safe and secure.

Never secure these devices with materials that fall when a load is placed on them. Ensure you can fix your unsafe cords and chains out of reach.

3. Choose safe blinds and curtains

Only buy LUXAFLEX Window Fashions which:

  • Are installed with warning label Swing Tags to remind you of dangers to children.
  • Are provided with an approved child safety mechanism to secure cords/chains.
  • Have no cords/chains such as motorised shades, LiteRise Lifting Systems, Vertiglide Operating Systems, Powerrise Operating Systems or Wand Control Systems.

4. Keep children away from all cords/chains

Move anything a young child can sit in, stand in, or climb on (like cots, highchairs, beds, sofas, tables, chairs and bookshelves) away from windows that have cords/chains.

5. Seek advice

If in any doubt visit your local Luxaflex dealer for free advice on devices to make your existing blinds safe or choose from new, innovative cordless blinds.

  • They sure are. My kids are a little grown up now. But we have all curtains so no worries about cords

  • Please take notice of this advice, if you have old blinds and are concerned regarding the cost of tying back the cords it can be done easily, bunnings sell the connectors, as do spotlight and lincraft, you can put a screw into the window frame and this will secure them, do whatever you can, many children have been killed or maimed with these blind cords, it is not worth it, fix them, or remove them, your childrens lives are worth it,

  • Cords and chains are such a temptation for kids. It is so important to choose the right/safe fittings for windows.

  • It should be law that the cord holders have to be higher than the current law is.
I have children who visit that have to watched constantly – because of my cords. They are legally fitted but had I thought about it I would have made the installer clip the cords up higher.

  • Great tips thanks for sharing

  • It really is simple DON’T HAVE THEM, or if you have no choice don’t have them in their bedroom at the very least. If you can’t due to renting etc. tie them up high and don’t use them, so you don’t forget.
