No mess painting for babies and toddlers.

Material

  • 1 Newspaper
  • 1 tbsp 3 or 4 Different Colour Paints
  • 1 Zip Lock Bag
  • Tape
  • Scissors
  • 4 pieces Sketch/Thick paper

Method

  1. Spoon paint into bag so that the blobs are not touching.
  2. Seal the bag and tape it to a window or glass door (or floor for babies).
  3. Let bubba poke, press and smudge paint around in bag.
  4. Lay down some newspaper and place sketch paper on top.
  5. Remove zip lock bag from window and cut all 4 edges off.
  6. Carefully pull the bag apart and place the pieces paint side down onto 2 of the pieces of sketch paper.
  7. Peel off the plastic and place the last 2 pieces of paper onto the painted paper to make a print.
  8. Peel apart the pieces of paper to reveal 4 copies of the artwork.
  9. Sit or hang up to dry.

Notes... Both my boys have been doing this since they could crawl. They use their hands, toys etc to spread the paint. Just make sure their nails are short and there are no harsh edges on the toys used.

  • It’s great to have some more things for bubs to do.

  • I really like this idea, as my baby is so interested in her older siblings’ artwork, but would immediately eat paint if I let her join in.

Like another poster though, I am a little concerned about the potential for this to go wrong an end up with huge mess. We only have carpet in our house unfortunately, so the results of a broken zip-lock bag could be rather bad!

I’m feeling brave though, and think my bub would love it, so I think I’ll take the risk!

    • We went ahead and tried this! Instead of the floor we did it with bub on her high chair, using a “sandwich” size zip lock bag. She was screwing it up and event trying to eat it but it didn’t come undone!

The prints turned out really cute, and I think she was quite impressed with the whole exercise! She didn’t get the least bit dirty, but I must admit to managing to get a lot of paint on myself while cutting open the bag! My 6 year old also decided to have a go, and creating some interesting effects, so it’s not only for babies.

  • Interesting concept, but I could foresee a heck of a mess if there was even a tiny pin-prick hole in the bag. And it would be just my luck for that to happen, no matter how careful I was.
