Sick of nits? Make a preventer and use it daily when your child goes to school. If your child actually has lice, this preventer may help but I would recommend using a commercial product to guarantee killing them initially. You can then use this preventer to keep them at bay.

Material

  • 1 spray bottle
  • 1 bottle tea tree oil
  • 1 bottle lavendar essential oil
  • water

Method

  1. It is important when making and storing nit preventer that you keep it away from children as tea tree oil is poisonous when swallowed. Make sure you make it away from children and store it out of reach.
  2. Fill a spray bottle 3/4 full with tap water.
  3. Add 8 drops of tea tree oil and 8 drops of lavender essential oil into the bottle. Give it a gentle shake and then to up with water.
  4. To use: spray all over your child's head (get them to close their eyes) and then concentrate on spraying around the back of their ears and base of the neck as this is where nits like to congregate initially.

Notes

I use a glass bottle as I like to know that no plastic chemicals will leach into the solution.

  • My sister used this in her kids hair. It worked for a while but its like the nits built up a tolerance to it

  • This is great to know. I hate when the kids start scratching their heads. I hate those dreaded nits.

  • My sister used this mix in her girls hair to prevent nits. It worked for a while but they eventually caught nits again. A down side was that after long term use, the hair looks permanently greasey

    • There is only a small amount of tea tree oil and lavender in the spray, so I would suggest spraying just around the base of the neck and ears where the nits tend to thrive, and regular weekly washing of hair to combat any greasiness.

  • I wil have to give this a go. It seems as soon as we get rid of nits they are back within a few short weeks. My kids school is horrible

  • I’ve used this for four years and my daughter has never had nits despite kids in her class having them several times. We always make sure her hair is tied back and plaited too to minimise the risk;

  • You could make a fortune if you sold this mixture, if it works. I know so many mums who aren’t happy with store bought preventative mixtures, I’ll be sharing this with them.

  • We have used this preventer for 3 years now and never once has my daughter had nits. And we’ve had a-lot of nits outbreaks over the terms!
