Make a beautiful terrarium for your office or child’s room for little to no cost. This is a great activity to do with children as they can help forage for the ‘ingredients’.

For ideas on how to pinch and propagate succulents click here. For other really cute ideas look up terrariums on Pinterest.

Material

  • 1 glass jar/vase/jug
  • 3-4 succulents
  • 1 knob of moss
  • 1 plastic animal
  • 1 cup of gravel, sand or any porous 'fill'

Method

  1. You will need a container - it can have a lid or simply be an open terrarium (open will need watering). Op shops are full of glass jars, jugs, vases - so pick up something that suits your style and is a good size for the space you want to put it in.
  2. Find a tenant for your green space. Op shops are always full of little plastic animals and people. A cute little horse, deer or even a Lego man would look great.
  3. Collecting the green for your terrarium is simple - the next stroll you are on, collect some moss from a footpath and pick a few cuttings from succulents in nature strip gardens. You'd be surprised how many there are once you start looking! Succulents will grow from a simple cutting see the notes for more info.
  4. Now find a cup of sand (kid's sandpit or the local creek/beach), pebbles or fill for the bottom of the terrarium. A good organic fill is tiny gumnuts or the seeds from bottlebrush plants. Basically anything that will retain some water in the bottom of the jar yet keep the moss/plants from swimming in water.
  5. Assemble! Add the fill, arrange the moss and plants and then place your animal etc. on the moss hill. Add some water and you are done!
