Hello!

I have been dying to get my daughter a playhouse because she wants to be outside all of the time. I started looking around at what is available and noticed that most of the second hand playhouses are a bit old and shabby looking. I decided that if I was going to give her a playhouse I wanted it to be one I’d be proud to have in my yard. This will help you give life back to an old outdoor playhouse allowing for hours of fun in a bright space that won’t be an eyesore.

Material

  • 1 Little Tikes Playhouse, or similar
  • 7 Cans of Rust-Oleum spray paint

Method

  1. Break playhouse down in to pieces. The shutters and doors will come out and the walls and roof all come apart.
  2. Clean pieces with soap and water, allow to thoroughly dry, I let mine sit overnight.
  3. You can then start painting the house. I did a light brown for the roof, beachy pink for the door and shutters, an aqua for the outside, light green for the top half of the inside and white for below the chair rail to add some definition to the interior. You'll need to spray paint one side at a time, giving 1-2 coats per colour.
  4. Allow the first side to dry for at least 24 hours before turning the piece over to do the other side.
  5. Once you have finished painting all of the pieces let the paint sit for 7 days to completely cure otherwise you will be chipping off paint when you reassemble the house.
  6. Reassemble your house and position in the yard, we've found under a tree works wonders to keep it from getting too hot in the summer.

Notes

You can find these old playhouses for $50 in online classifieds, it's amazing how much better they look with a fresh coat of paint.
You can even add a little picket fence and flowers to give them their own complete home, we'll be adding this next year when our daughter will be old enough to help tend to the plants.

  • Clever idea to re-use. We were given a wooden cubby house by another family so were lucky in that instance. We also passed it onto another family when my son outgrew it.
