Hello!

So after picking a few discarded ladders put out on clean-up days I finally had the time this weekend past to put it to use as a planter that I’d been envisioning for a little while.

Material

  • 1 Old ladder
  • Multiple Pots
  • Qty Soil
  • Various Variety of plants preferred for your space
  • 1 Spray can of wood treatment/sealer
  • Assorted Tools and hardware ie. jigsaw, drill and washers and screws

Method

  1. Firstly I cut the ladder down to a manageable height. Because I chose to have this ladder leaning and didn't want to have to climb up on another ladder just to water the plants.
  2. On the top of the ladder, cut matching angles on the outer frame so that the ladder can lean without moving/slipping.
  3. Because my ladder is wood I sprayed the entire surface in a treatment that protects wood from rotting etc. Then left to dry for at least two hours.
  4. I used vases for my pots and made little crosses on the bases of all of them with masking/electrical tape and then drilled at the centre of these crosses. Doing this helps to prevent cracking.
  5. Measure where on the ladder rung you want to fix the pots and pre-drill holes. Then attach the pots to the ladder rung using screws and washers. Once I felt they were firmly fixed in position I filled with a standard garden mix.
  6. My chosen plants were a mixture of succulents I already have around the yard, I took a few leaves from various plants and placed them on-top of the soil in the planters. I have increased my succulent garden drastically over the years with no need to purchase any plants, just by taking leaves and putting them on soil and the put out new plants in no time.
  7. Step back and admire your handy work. You could mix and match all the mentioned materials and come up with something truly unique for your home and garden, have fun with it!

Notes

As I used a chemical spray to seal/protect the wood I would not recommend putting in any edible plants on the ladder.

  • This looks very pretty, although with my kids, I’d be worried it would be too easy to knock over.
