Give an old op shop table a new lease of life with a little paint.

Material

  • 1 Trolley table, side table, whatever old table suits your style
  • 1 Neutral paint for table legs (either a spray can or sample pot)
  • 1 Contrasting colour for table top (sample pot works best)
  • 1 Bucket of sugar soap and water and a sponge
  • 1 Paint brush
  • 1 Spray can of clear sealant or tub of mod podge (decoupage glue)
  • 1 Old cardboard box or sheet to protect your lawn!
  • 1 Piece of sandpaper

Method

  1. Decide on a piece of furniture that has good lines - an old side table with some detail on the legs is perfect.
  2. Wash it down with sugar soap and water and let it dry in the sun. If you don't give it a thorough clean, the paint may not adhere. Sand any little splintered spots.
  3. Put the table on top of your sheet or cardboard to protect your lawn/garage floor (if you're painting inside, make sure you have good ventilation, especially with spray paint). Paint the legs and undersides of the table in a neutral colour. I used a can of oil based spray paint, but a sample pot of wall paint would be just fine.
  4. Once dry, carefully paint the table top in your contrasting colour.
  5. Let the table dry for at least 24 hours.
  6. If you like, rough up the edges with the sandpaper if you like a distressed look. The kids love doing this part. Wipe with a damp cloth to remove paint dust.
  7. Cover the whole table in a coat of sealant or mod podge. I like to put at least three coats of mod podge over my table top to protect it from coffee cup stains or water.

Notes

There are no rules when it comes to this sort of project - be brave, splash some paint on, if you don't like it, just repaint!
