Baby Asha has spent her first night in community detention after being released from a Brisbane hospital yesterday.

The long-term future of the asylum-seeker baby is still in doubt and her current whereabouts is unknown.

Family of the one-year-old, made contact with lawyers on Monday afternoon, after the Human Rights Law Centre (HRLC) publicly complained about a three-day communication block, which it is claimed was imposed by Border Force authorities.

“It’s a matter of basic fairness and due process that vulnerable people are able to speak with their lawyers,” said Daniel Webb, HRLC director of legal advocacy.  We hope the government respects these principles in the future.”

Lawyers for the HRLC, are still unable to disclose the infant’s whereabouts after she was discharged from Brisbane’s Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital early yesterday morning.

Immigration Minister Peter Dutton has repeatedly warned the family will be returned to Nauru when their legal and medical issues are finalised.

Protesters have vowed to mobilise and fight again if the government attempts to send the family offshore.

  • The pressure on the government needs to continue to ensure this family is never sent back to the hellhole on Nauru.

  • No child should be placed in detention. Its inhumane and this child is an innocent in this situation.
