Supermarkets are being forced to lock up baby formula behind the service desk to stop overseas buyers stripping shelves.

A photograph posted to Reddit yesterday showed a sign at a Coles store indicating the popular A2 Platinum baby formula had been moved elsewhere.

“Popular lines of baby formula will now be available from the service kiosk to provide equal opportunity for all customers and deter theft,” the sign said.

It is the latest move by retailers to stop shoppers scouting the product and shipping it overseas, leaving mothers unable to feed their infant children because of a shortage of baby formula, reports 9 news.

Parents of allergy-sensitive children fear they could be forced to make a hospital trip simply to feed them, with prescription infant formula being snapped up by Chinese buyers to send overseas. Read more here.

  • Perhaps China should arrange with the Producers to buy direct and all private shipments should be banned.

  • It’s sad that it has to come to this, but whatever it takes to prevent people from stripping the shelves of it to send overseas

  • It’s a pity it’s had to come to this. If the product is so good for overseas children, why doesn’t the company just increase the size of their business.

  • Absurd that they had to arrive to this point, but it was surely the best thing to do!!

  • Finally someone has had the balls to actually do something!

  • What a wonderful idea – well done!

  • I think this is a great idea. Should have been done soon but it’s also a shame that it has to come to this. I don’t think I’ve ever bought more than one tin at a time because I didn’t want someone else to miss out. Maybe there needs to be more regulation with not just the quantity of tins being purchased here in Oz but with the quantity of tins being sent over seas. I also can’t believe how much people charge online for formula.

  • I heard about this on the radio – how crazy!

  • A good move and a better way to monitor and manage this supply issue.

    • It seems to have taken a very long time for this action!

  • A good and logical move.
Oversees buyers stripping / trying to strip the shelves should be charged / heavily fined and in the meantime production has to increase

  • Something needs to happen, it’s out of control.

  • I’m not sure why more isn’t being done to increase supplies when there is a clear demand. You can’t expect people not to take advantage of the opportunity to make such large amounts of money. I desperately tried to breastfeed and was unsuccessful and my anxiety about access to formula was through the roof.

  • Seems a sensible approach under the circumstances.

  • This way it is fair for every-one to buy it,l can’t believe it has come to this!

  • I think this is a great idea and should have been done sooner. I’m lucky to be able to breastfeed and I can’t imagine how stressful it must be to not know if you are going to be able to get your babies formula. It also raises the question of WHY the formula companies don’t invest in a good marketing campaign to make the Chinese people realise the formula is safe to buy from their own country.
