Hello!

We used to buy all our bread from Baker’s Delight. But then we discovered our local bakery was more than half the price of Baker’s Delight plus the loaves of bread from Woolies and Coles are also a fraction the cost of those from Baker’s Delight.

So I’m not surprised that two Bakers Delight stores will close in Darwin in the Northern Territory in June.

As reported in the Daily Mail, the closures were confirmed by Bakers Delight joint chief executive Elise Gillespie who said the company was shutting down franchises at Darwin City and Casuarina Square.

This follows another closure of the bakery chain outlet in Darwin’s CBD earlier this year.

Can’t Sustain Business

The reasons suggested for shutting the doors of these shops include a general downturn in the city’s economy.

‘Unfortunately, with the economic climate in Darwin, we haven’t been able to sustain businesses,’ Ms Gillespie told Newscorp.

‘Across bakeries in Darwin the last few years foot traffic has dropped quite considerably. We often make it through the wet season by what we achieve through the dry.’

The employees in the affected stores (about 10 – 20 people) will be supported by the company.

Ms Gillespie has reassured residents that if the economy turns around and we can find local franchisees and good sites that work from a lease perspective, absolutely we’d consider returning to Darwin.

Baker’s Delight, was originally established in Victoria in 1980 and now has outlets in over 700 locations across the world.

  • When I read the title I was sad to think they were all closing. I love their custard almond scrolls and cheese and spinach twists and so much more, if miss it!

  • Its sad that people aren’t willing to pay for quality which then means the business’ shut due to not getting any revenue. The bread at bakers delight is soooo much better then coles or woolies bread! You can really taste the differnce.

  • I love Baker’s Delight bread, it tastes better than Coles and Woolies loaves and they do have a rewards club so every now and then there’s a free loaf and a little gift on my birthday.

  • I used to love buying the cheesie mite scrolls and the seed bread, sadly our local store closed over 12 months ago and hasn’t re-opened. Lots of shops are closing locally in WA .

  • I must admit, I used to buy from Bakers Delight but now buy from my Coles bakery as part of my weekly shop. It’s cheaper and easier to buy.

  • I have to say that I have never bought my day to day bread from here – just for dinner parties and special events. It’s nice bread but too expensive for everyday.

  • I used to buy my bread from Brumby’s but they closed down. Now it seems that Baker’s Delight is starting to do the same. Hope they stay open in my area as I much prefer their bread to Supermarket bread.

  • I love Bakers Delight- their bread is amazing, but I too find their bread very expensive and can only afford to shop there on special occasions.

  • I do like the convenience of Bakers Delight as I prefer bakery bread and they’re open better hours. I do think they’re expensive though. Local bakeries are generally no more than $3.50 per loaf whereas Bakers Delight are $4.50 unless you buy 2 which is $7.50.

  • I really love Bakers Delight, and was happy to pay the price when we are having soup (requiring delicious fresh bread, cut thickly at home) – the flavour is second to none. While woolies, coles and independant bakeries are indeed a fraction of the price, the flavour just isn’t there.
