Secondhand Bonds cotton baby suits which have been selling for hundreds of dollars online could now be worthless as the company announces that they are re-releasing the most popular patterns.

The lucrative secondary market for Wondersuits started because Bonds releases new designs seasonally – with the same patterns never repeated.  This instantly created a demand among parents who wanted a particular suit, but could no longer buy it from a traditional retail outlet.

Second hand clothing dealers stepped into the space and started reselling the Wondersuits at very inflated prices.  A new Wondersuit sells for a RRP of $20.00.  On the second hand market, the prices have escalated to $200 each on Ebay.

Bonds has now announced that it will be repeating a selection of the much sort after patterns for the first time – instantly taking the air out of the second hand market.  The company denies that this move has anything to do with the booming secondary market of their products, instead insisting that the company was simply responding to customer feedback.

Speaking in an interview with the Sydney Morning Herald, a spokesman for the company said, “We like to respond to consumer demand on certain prints and where possible we may bring a top selling item back again for sale.”

But while Bonds has popped the bubble in one area of the secondary market, they seem to have started another new version.

In January the company announced the production of “limited edition Mickey and Minnie Mouse Zip Wondersuits” that went on sale on February 3.

“We see these Zippy’s as real collector’s items, something that can be cherished and passed down throughout the family as a special keepsake,” creative director at Bonds, Jane Newman, was quoted as saying on the company’s blog.

While these suits retail for $39, they are already selling for about $50 on Ebay.

  • I guess people pay for what they want – I certainly wouldn’t buy these.

  • People spend so much money on secondhand wondersuits just because of the pattern. It is unbelievable!

  • Second hand suits were dearer than new?!!! I used bonds wonder suits for all my kids, then passed them on for my nieces and nephews. They last really well, but there is NO way I’d buy a second hand suit for those prices. Incredible.

  • I was intrigued by this headline and had to read to understand it. Really? Paying too much money for a limited edition baby suit? I think I’d be saving my money for more meaningful limited edition, one-of-a-kind items!

  • Who in their right mind would pay even that amount for a new one? A brand new one isn’t worth $39.00 either unless it is either pure cotton or pure wool.
    Maybe a millionaire!!

  • I’d never pay that for second hand baby clothing no matter what condition. Seems there are many people out there with more money than sense.

  • Regardless of what you pay, babies will do unspeakable things in and to their clothes. Better not to invest too much.

  • Good on bonds for trying to take the cream off second hand sales – seriously though – who would pay $200 for a piece of baby clothing??
