Winter is that time of year when more bugs seems to be around. This is mostly due to the change of weather being colder and staying inside more meaning less sunlight and more chances of sharing bacteria.

Younger children in summer tend to always be wearing sunscreen for protection so even in the summer months their natural Vitamin D intake from the sun is very low. In addition if there is a dairy intolerance these children would lacking in Vitamin D and most likely become sick with upper respiratory infections quite often.

Traditionally cod liver oil, which contains natural Vitamin D, was used to boost the immune system and at some stage this knowledge of giving cod liver oil to boost the immune system and prevent infection has been lost.

Now its seems science has caught up and studies over the past few year on Vitamin D have shown its effect on the immune system cells.

The studies found people with lower Vitamin D levels have a higher instance of upper respiratory infections.

Cod liver oil is rich in natural Vitamin D and Vitamin A, as well as being beneficial for the immune system it helps brain development and vision development in younger children.

Cod liver oil is something that can be given all year round to help maintain vitamin D levels and keep the immune system healthy.

Especially in children under the age of six as their immune systems are not fully developed yet. Always consult your health practitioner before starting any supplements.

  • Heard of fish oil but never cod liver oil. COD is a fish so I’m assuming it’s same thing?

  • We have a healthy diet, lots of outside physical activities, lots of sleep. I hope this is enough to boost their immune system. As well as being fully immunised and being exposed to illnesses at school. It all helps

  • I’m onto this. Kids are exposed to and suffer from so many illnesses from other kids, I’ll try almost anything to improve their immune systems and reduce further illnesses. Thank you for this advice

  • Although (weirdly) I never had any aversion to cod liver oil when I was younger I am aware that there are flavoured forms of the oil now that disguise the fish smell taste for the younger ones as well as there because capsule forms.
