In today’s news Police have praised the bravery of a girl who saved her brother’s life during an early morning fire.

The girl, believed to be 11 or 12, woke just before 5:30am to find the rear of their Heidelberg Heights unit was ablaze, reports ABC NEWS.

Sergeant Matt Bull said she tried to put out the fire herself before waking her brother and taking him to a neighbouring unit to seek help.

“She’s been a really good, brave kid,” Sergeant Bull said.

“She’s not only saved her brother’s life but herself as well. She could have just left the unit on her own but she’s gone back into the house to get him out, so she’s done a great job.”

Paramedics assessed the pair but said neither child needed treatment.

“The children were very lucky actually,” paramedic Marcus Stacey said. “They showed no signs of any effects of the smoke at all.”

The fire caused some damage to the home and a MFB fire investigator is looking into how it started.

Police are also speaking to the children’s parents about why they were home alone.

What a great big sister!

  • oh my goodness that is so brave of her, to go back in a scary situation and save her brother – so courageous.

I hope there was a genuine reason why they were without their parents at that time of the morning!

  • wow what a brave, quick acting girl. It’s great that she cared about her sibling that much to risk her safety! Never leave kids home alone though because this could’ve been a different outcome.

  • Lucky outcome! Those poor parents will be kicking themselves for leaving the kids at home alone

  • This could have ended so bad. Very weird that the kids were left alone at home.
But the girl has been really good. Luckily she took action immediately!!!

  • I don’t think the Police are going to be lenient with the parents for leaving their children home alone. The children could easily have died from smoke inhalation before the fire actually reached them.

    • No doubt – there will be a thorough examination of the circumstances of the fire.
