NEWS JUST IN: It has been reported as many as 13 people have been injured after a train hit a buffer stop at the end of the rail line at Richmond in Sydney’s north-west.
Emergency services were called to the station about 10am.
Most of the injuries were cuts and bruises but at least two people have more severe injuries. Reports that three people are trapped, with witnesses describing it as “chaotic”.
One patient has a reported hip injury, two people have possible spinal injuries, one patient has a collar bone injury and another has a possible leg injury, an ambulance spokesman said.
Three helicopters, 17 ambulance crews, Fire and Rescue NSW crews and SES crews were on the scene.
A Fire and Rescue NSW spokesman said one crew was on the scene just after 10.10am and six more rescue crews had been tasked to assist ambulance crews. At least three people were trapped.
“Richmond is a dead end line and there is just a buffer stop at the end of the rail line, and he has hit it by the sounds of it,” a rail union official said.
He said it appeared that those injured had suffered mostly “bumps and bruises”, suggesting that the train had hit the buffer at a low speed.
