A two-year-old girl has been found dead in a home in Sydney’s south west.

A 27-year-old mother has been charged with the murder of her two-year-old daughter whose body was found yesterday.

A post-mortem examination will determine how she died, and its results will determine the direction of further inquiries, police say.

The mother was arrested by police overnight and formally charged, reports 9 news.

She was refused bail and will appear in Penrith Local court today.

NSW Police have confirmed the body of the toddler was found shortly after midday on Tuesday after police received a call from a member of the public concerned about the child’s welfare.

The spokeswoman said emergency services discovered the child’s body.

A crime scene has been established at the Miller home, reports SMH.

An investigation is under way, a NSW Police spokeswoman said.

They would not provide details about whether anyone else was inside the house.

“Investigations are underway and a postmortem exam will determine how the child died,” she said.

The young toddler may have been deceased for days before she was finally found.

Police say they responded to a call from someone concerned for the two-year-old’s welfare when it was discovered her mother is believed to be in hospital following an accident over the weekend.

According to The Daily Telegraph, the toddler possibly drowned in a bathtub – as a nearby resident claimed there had been three bathtub drownings on the same street in the last 10 years. Although the child is believed to have been found in the tub covered in a towel.

A woman in her 20s is believed to have been living in the house with her partner.

This is breaking news, more details to come…

  • Such a terrible story – pity that when neighbours do raise concerns nothing is done. We are constantly told to raise our concerns, but if this keeps happening, we will stop doing so. This poor little girl – who knows what trauma she went through – maybe she will be happy now with the angels.

  • This poor child. It sounds like the neighbours were aware that the mother of this child was unwell, if only they had contacted police before this tragedy happened?
