Hello!

It’ll be more of a fizzle rather than a sizzle at Bunnings Warehouse, as the giant hardware chain reacts to the Coronavirus threat by cancelling its popular sausage sizzles.

The warehouse retailer said that this decision to shut down its charity barbecues was made after consultation with the community.

“Having listened closely to community groups, we’ve learned of the challenges many groups are facing finding volunteers and even supplies to sell given some of the reported challenges being faced by other retailers,” said Managing director Mike Schneider.

“We also want to make sure our team remain focused on helping customers to access the products they need.

“We absolutely understand the important role these sausage sizzles play for thousands of local community groups and charities and that finding alternative fundraising opportunities at short notice isn’t easy.”

Taking The Bite Out Of The Cancellation

In a move to placate those who have booked fundraising sausage sizzles over the next month, Bunnings will be donating $500 gift cards to the community organisations affected.

“Across Australia and NZ, this represents an investment into local communities of over $1.2million,” Mr Schneider said.

Mr Schneider acknowledged that this decision would disappoint many people but Bunnings  “can’t wait to bring this much-loved community program back.”

Other Events Affected Too

The hardware retailer is also planning to cancel all in-store events until further notice. This includes Easter and Mother’s Day Family Nights, school holiday workshops and trade breakfasts.

Mr Schneider said Bunnings is still trading as normal and was applying a “strongly common sense based approach to its operations”.

  • It is disappointing as I know first hand that these barbecues are a huge fundraiser for so many community groups. But it’s the right thing to do and we are all in this together. Stay safe and strong everyone. We will get through this.

  • I applauded them for trying to help the situation.

  • It’s a sausage in a bit of bread, nothing to be disappointed about, the charities won’t miss out with Bunnings being so generous and good on them putting public safety first. More business and organisation should be as responsible as Bunnings.

  • I know it will be disappointing for people but I’ve never been able to get to one of these sausage sizzles anyway. It’s great of Bunnings to offer these vouchers to the organisations that had already booked.

  • I can understand why Bunnings would cancel but at the same time, I’ve never seen a huge crowd & now how am I meant to get a moments peace from my terrors whilst trying to shop in Bunnings lol

  • It was inevitable but I really feel for the community groups who were booked in to run them. They’re such great money raisers for local groups/clubs

  • This is sad, but very sensible.

  • I think serving this type of food should be postponed for now. It makes sense to me.
