Hello!

The Bunnings Sausage Sizzle has reached almost cult-like status for its loyal patrons but many shoppers are up in arms that their beloved tradition is being messed up with a distinctly meat-free, vegan sausage sizzle.

A Bunnings store in Rockingham, WA has rocked the boat by announcing a charity vegan sausage sizzle, selling only snags made of bean and pea puree.

The special meatless event has been planned for 19 March to help raise funds for Greyhounds Adoption WA.

All money will go toward re-homing former racing greyhounds and was designed to encourage ‘tolerance and acceptance’, a spokesperson for Greyhounds Adoption WA told 9News.

Unhappy Shoppers

However, it seems the event is causing just the opposite, with disgruntled fans saying that the veggie Bunning’s sausage sizzle may keep customers away.

“Typical vegans. Always shoving things down our throat that we don’t wanna eat. Not everyone wants your way of eating/life,” one critic ranted.

“They’re just pleasing the two million [Australian] vegans and ignoring the other 22 million who eat meat.”

UnAustralian!

One shopper at the hardware store said the idea of a vegan Bunnings Sausage Sizzle was unAustralian but would be prepared to give the bean alternative a go.

“I don’t think you should be forcing people to have it, but it should be an option,” he added.

Not All Bad

However, it’s not all doom and gloom and some shoppers are applauding the controversial initiative.

‘It doesn’t make sense to raise funds to save kangaroos, koalas and greyhounds but then turn around and eat other animals,’ one woman said.

The organisers of the event say that customers won’t be able to tell the difference with the meat-free alternative.

  • Not sure why this is a big deal when there is a sausage sizzle every other week and people who don’t eat sausages have not option. Bunnings is a hardware store not a takeaway food outlet. And it’s for charity, so experiment and try this or if you go to Bunnings strictly for the sausage sizzle you only need to wait one week.

  • People will always complain but maybe they could have offered a choice to customers. To me there isn’t any taste difference between the meat-free and meat products available so I wouldn’t have minded eating either.

  • Why not they can raise more money which is what it’s for

  • I bet it would prob taste the same

  • I don’t mid the idea – I think it’s good to give people the option, although I wouldn’t buy one, I love my sausage to have meat!

  • Simple, if you don’t like vegan, don’t purchase a vegan sausage. I imagine it’s only for one week, and as long as it’s advertised as vegan people can make a choice.

  • It may not be Australia but it will be great for people who for genuine medical reasons cannot have dairy at all —-or any food that has come into contact with it. They don’t supply epi-pens for people with that or medication allergies. I know a man who actually stopped breathing and had to be rushed to hospital only recently because of traces of a dairy product. Take a look at the ingredients on a lot of packaging. It is astounding how many items either contain or have traces of dairy. It could be Whey Powder (is from dairy milk) Milk Powder, Lactose (in dairy milk). Others including babies vomit whole meals and (other fluids which means dehydration as well) and have to be taken to hospital for treatment……Some sausages have / had milk powder in them. Some sausages have wheat flour in them – a lot of people have wheat allergy or are allergic to the protein in wheat, barley, rye, and in most cases also oats which means they need Gluten Free Sausages. Such Sufferers miss out on so many basic meals and treats

  • It’s good to have the option but I’m not going to try them. There is never a sausage sizzle when I go to Bunnings so it’s not a problem for me. Also you can’t call it a sausage sizzle if there’s no meat.

    • Yes I agree an option would be good. Just as much a vegan wouldn’t like to eat meat, a meat eater might not like to eat vegan

  • We had a vegan sausages day at our local Bunnings over a year ago. Apparently it was successful, but it’s not my cup of tea so I just didn’t buy One that weekend.

  • Yes a vegetarian and vegan option is good ! 4 of us are vegetarian and 1 of those is also diary free. I don’t know how often my kids have missed out on a food of their choice in restaurants and places like Bunnings and McDonalds simply because there’s no option available, but I can tell you it’s very very frequent.

  • I’d like to know if it will still be the same price? These types of products are usually expensive. Also really don’t think it should be vegan only- set it up to do both.

  • I’d like to try one :)

  • I honestly don’t mind. I welcome anything that is cruelty free!
I bet a lot of people won’t even be able to tell the difference unless someone says something.

  • They probably wouldn’t even be able to tell the difference if they weren’t told. I’d buy one
