“If Coles won’t support the local dairy farmers well come on public don’t support Coles. It’s as simple as that.”

The push for a 10c per litre levy on milk to help drought-stricken farmers is growing, but Woolworths has said they’ll only do it if all the other supermarkets support the levy as well.

Minister for Agriculture and Water Resources David Littleproud told the Nine Network Woolworths have shown support for the milk levy, but the process can only move forward if Coles get on board.

Farmers are calling on the public to boycott Coles if they can’t offer them the support they deserve.

When a member of the public questioned Coles about their decision not to support the levy their response was still not acceptable.

“Coles has decided the most effective way to assist farmers across the whole sector is to raise and match funds at the checkouts to provide CWA the funds to support drought-affected communities.”

  • What a pity this forcing Coles has done to the farmers. I always bought the Farmer’s Fund milk from Coles which gave back either 40 or 50c for each 2litre container of milk purchased. Since being forced into adopting the 10c a litre on a 3litre container, Coles has no longer had the Farmers Fund milk, so I and many, many other buy the Coles 2litre milk and nothing goes to the farmers. How short sighted was this?

  • I would support ten cents to farmers, it is the least we could do when some are losing everything and feeling like taking their own lives

  • As long as all 10c actually went to the farmers, sure. Milk was more expensive when I was growing up. Bottled water has been far more expensive than the price per litre of milk. So at least this price rise would support a great cause

  • It’s a bit sad that Coles isn’t on board in this. I think most people wouldn’t have a problem with this on are willing to support our farmers.

  • I wonder who is actually processing the milk that Coles sell with their brand on it??
Normally their products are supplied by a large manufacturer/distributor and put in Coles packaging. Sounds like Coles must have a special deal with some farmers but where is the factory the milk is processed at?

  • An extra 10¢ is nothing so yes I would support it. But better yet, we should be pushing big supermarkets to pay farmers fair prices in the first place, especially for milk.
