A 2-year-old boy was discovered home alone in a yard sucking on a frozen chicken breast.

Iowa mother, Hallie Elizabeth Amick, 30, was charged with child endangerment causing physical injury and drug possession.

The Des Moines register reports, officers stopped a vehicle for speeding on Monday morning. The man told police he was rushing home because a child had been left alone.

Another officer was sent to check on the house where the child was found alone in the backyard with a full diaper, sucking on a frozen chicken breast, according to a police report.

A small terrier was jumping at the boy, trying to get at the chicken, the report said. A neighbour said she’d previously seen the dog bite the boy and the boy hit the dog with sticks.

“His diaper was almost down to his knees,” said Deborah Snyder, 57, who can see into the yard from her apartment window.

Snyder told police Monday that Amick often leaves the child alone at home.

“This is the first time he got out of the house, but ever since they moved in they (left) him alone,” Snyder said. She said Amick moved into the home around the beginning of the year.

Another neighbour told police she once found the child alone in the middle of the street.

When Amick returned home on Monday almost two hours after police were called, she claimed it was the first time she’d left her child unattended. But once confronted with the statements of her neighbours, Amick admitted the she left the child alone on “occasion.”

Police searched the home and found a marijuana pipe, “blunts” and marijuana stems.

The Iowa Department of Human Services was called to the scene.

Amick was released from jail after her first court hearing.

  • Why on earth did the neighbours know that she was leaving the child alone and yet for an entire year not one of them contacted the police????

  • Some people don’t deserve to have kids. She obviously doesn’t care about her child and there are so many people out there who would make wonderful parents, but who can’t fall pregnant.

  • This is another mother I hope doesn’t get her child back. She needs treatment and then she needs to prove herself competent and trustworthy.

  • Why in Gods name do some people have kids when they treat them like this?! How hungry must he have been to be eating raw chicken?! And the dog is obviously neglected too, fighting the child for the wing. Just horrifying what some people see as being ok

  • Simply disgusting. Some people just should not be allowed to have children!!

  • I do hope this child was taken from this home and put somewhere safe and with people who will care for him. What a sad and terrible story.

  • I certainly hope the Police didn’t allow the child to return to his Mum (if he is her chid). The child possibly has food poisoning from the chicken. Maybe the child doesn’t go outside with food. The dog probably didn’t even understand it wasn’t for it. The dog is probably starved and it probably should be rescued too. Possibly the child found a way to climb up to get the chicken because he was so hungry.

  • Shocking and sad ! What a neglect ! What an irresponsible behaviour from the parents. Clearly they are not suitable to care, protect and love on their children.
When neighbours knew about this, they should have notify Community services.

  • Some people just shouldn’t have children – they don’t appear to want, love or cherish them.

  • So many more questions than answers in this article :/ I’m just so glad we have stricter laws in our country in regards to child safety!
