Broome Police have charged a driver after they found a child sitting unrestrained in a car while the driver’s cartons of beer were secured in a seatbelt.

Speaking with PerthNow, Broome Police Sergeant Paul World said he was conducting routine traffic patrols on Great Northern Highway, Broome about 11.50am on Wednesday when he made the clearly unsafe discovery.

“There were three adults, one child and two safely secured away cartons of beer in the car,” he said.

The male driver, who had a suspended licence, was charged with no authority to drive and failing to restrain a child under the age of 16.

Broome Police have been running an operation targeting drivers with unrestrained children and Sargent World said the discovered incidents were alarming.

Just eight days before this incident, Sargent World said a Toyota Rav 4 was stopped with ten people inside.  Four adults and six children ranging in age from just a few months old to six years.

“That driver was charged with high level driving under the influence of alcohol, driving on a suspended licence and having six unrestrained kids in the car,” he said.

Broome Police announced last Friday that their current operation had stopped 65 vehicles in nine hours and located 25 unrestrained children.

  • Good grief. I’m hoping all those children were ok firstly and secondly, I hope they impound his car. Sounds like it may just happen again given his already suspended licence.

  • Another abhorrent story involving alcohol. When is the mindset in this country going to grow up. It’s one thing for teenagers to behave badly because their brains are not fully developed. What excuse to adults/parents/middle-aged have?

  • Oh yes! I read it this morning in the newspaper. The beer more important than the baby. Unbelievable!!

  • Some of these problems (eg overloading cars) seem more prevalent in remote areas.

  • I dont drink and im very glad of that.
It seems to me that more and more its an acceptable thing for younger people to joke with their friends about getting smashed, etc. Makes me worry about when they themselves are parents.
I think we need to change our mindset as far as how acceptable it is to drink around children.
