Apple has warned this feature shouldn’t be used by children under the age of 13.

The new facial recognition tool, Face ID, is not recommended for kids.

The firm claims that their faces ‘may not have fully developed’ and are too similar, increasing the chance that their iPhone could be unlocked by someone else, reports Daily Mail.

Apple said: ‘The statistical probability is different for twins and siblings that look like you and among children under the age of 13, because their distinct facial features may not have fully developed.’

Find out more about the feature here.

Face ID uses a TrueDepth front-facing camera on the iPhone X, which has multiple components.

A Dot Projector projects more than 30,000 invisible dots onto your face to map its structure.

The dot map is then read by an infrared camera and the structure of your face is relayed to the A11 Bionic chip in the iPhone X, where it is turned into a mathematical model.

Not sure I would be using it myself, I don’t even use the fingerprint feature, do you?

  • I can’t imagine why a young child would have an iPhone. Technology is going ahead in leaps and bounds and proving very hard to keep up with.

  • lol i wouldn’t trust my kids not to break it or other kids not to steal it. what’s wrong with a basic $30 phone? it’ll do the job

  • Maybe don’t let young children on a iPhone to begin with? But if they must, then disable the app so they can’t ‘accidently’ get on it.

  • Why would a child need and iPhone to begin with??

  • Can’t imagine why kids this young would have or need an iPhone.

  • I don’t even have an iPhone, no I wouldn’t let my child, have this option. Nor would I use it

  • I wouldn’t use it as I had enough trouble using the finger swipe option

  • I don’t believe in or trust facial recognition for anyone – adults or children alike! With other security measures already in place, why give yourself or your kids more angst!

  • Why would you even turn this on for your kids? Put this on your phone so your kids can’t get into it! Personally get my kid a cheaper phone. They’d only break the screen anyway.

  • wow interesting article – I cant ever imagine my daughters when they are 13 having the current iphone! – unless they have full time jobs and can pay for it themselves!

Sometimes I think these gadgets have gone too far out with the whole finger print id, voice recognition etc – can one not simply have a pin number if it is really necessary to lock your phone?

  • Not something I would ever use.

  • I think my husband is the only one having an iPhone in the house, but he doesn’t use FaceID or fingerprint to unlock his phone

  • I don’t have an iPhone. My husband does and he uses the fingerprint feature.
Do 13 years old kids actually have their own iPhone????? Ha! Ha! I feel very poor! :-)

    • No – not all children or adults have iphones – you are not alone. :)

      • Luckily! For a moment I really felt like an outsider!! :-)

      • Not at all :) You have company. :)
