Hello!

We love how honest and candid mum-of-two and celebrity model Chrissy Teigen is about motherhood and life in general. Her latest confession talks about her secret to avoiding postnatal depression after her second pregnancy.

Teigen revealed on CBS Sunday Morning’s 40th-anniversary special, that her unconventional solution to skating past PND after the birth of her son, Miles Theodore, was to eat her placenta.

Host Rita Braver responded with: “I don’t think I can have you eating your placenta on primetime,”.
Chrissy was surprised at the host’s reaction: “Really? That’s not a normal thing?” she quipped. “I’m in L.A., it’s very normal. They grill it here! You can try some of mine after.”

Eating Placenta Is Trendy

Eating placenta after birth is becoming quite the trend. According to USA Today, celeb mums such as Kim Kardashian West, Katherine Heigl, Alicia Silverstone and January Jones all have done it.

Advocates say that eating placenta can improve energy and mood in new mums. It also is supposed to reduce pain and increases milk production.

Placenta is usually dried and made into capsules. But it can also be eaten raw, cooked, roasted or added to smoothies. This mum even made placenta chocolate.

Open About Her Struggles With PND

Teigen has been quite open about her struggle with PND after she gave birth to her first child, Luna.

She told Glamour: “I couldn’t figure out why I was so unhappy. I blamed it on being tired and possibly growing out of the role. Maybe I’m just not a goofy person anymore. Maybe I’m just supposed to be a mom.”
I also just didn’t think it could happen to me. I have a great life. I have all the help I could need. John, my mother (who lives with us), a nanny. But postpartum does not discriminate. I couldn’t control it. And that’s part of the reason it took me so long to speak up: I felt selfish, icky, and weird saying aloud that I’m struggling. Sometimes I still do.”

As reported in Marie Claire, Teigen took antidepressants and relied on her husband for support.

Teigen told CBS Sunday Morning that talking about the condition really did help. “I think (my fans) deserved to know.”

Husband John admitted that he had been worried about Teigen after the Miles’ birth. He said in a recent interview with Dan Wootten: “I think Chrissy is feeling better than she did after the first baby,” “It’s always a concern when you go through it the first time that it might happen again.”

We’re really glad that Chrissy is feeling so much better the second-time round.

  • just the thought of it would give me depression…no thank you

  • Don’t think I’d try this remedy and probably the PND didn’t occur this time because she had a better idea of what to expect.

  • There’s no way she categorically state eating the placenta meant she didn’t get pnd. And yuck, no way. Hilary Duff had hers in a smoothie. Ew!

  • Not my cup of tea either. Don’t think I could bring myself to do that.

  • There’s no way I could do this even if I was told it was beneficial for me. Not my cup of tea

  • I haven’t and I wouldn’t, no matter what health benefits there are. This seems to be more commonplace now though. Not for me.

  • To me it looks gross. It reminds me a bit of liver which I don’t like.

  • Hmmm. Not be be controversal but I have done a lot of research on this subject and I can’t find any real studies that prove its benefits and that it actually be dangerous, especially when made into pills in an unknown uncertified lab. But each to there own :)

  • Thanks for sharing Chrissy Teigen. I think especially mums who’ve experienced PND, can relate to your fear to go through it again.
Personally I wouldn’t be able to eat my placenta, even the thought makes me a bit nauseous..

  • Love her and her honesty. It’s great that we can all relate whether you’re a celeb or not

  • Animals eat their placenta buy it’s not for me thanks

  • I’d be too worried about any toxicity it could cause. A placenta is an organ designed to remove waste products as well as provide nutrients to bub. There is no way to control what is in it.
